My genius plan to reduce L delays by 90% overnight

Would you have stepped in for a crazy man yelling at an old lady on the L?

This has been making me feel guilty all week because I did nothing and want to hear what yall think the best course of action would have been.

Basically I was on the Redline north branch around 10pm last weekend and a crazy man was just yelling and threatening this older lady, maybe mid 70s, for like 5 mins.

The train car had maybe 15 people in it, and when the yelling started I took my AirPods off and made eye contact with both the lady and the crazy man.

He walked over to me, yelled how he was gonna “beat my fucking ass” then moved back to the older lady.

She did everything right as far as not engaging, no eye contact, and staying seated. He left after 5 mins and I immediately felt bad for not stepping in.

At what point do yall think confronting the crazy person is required? Like do you have to wait until it turns violent? Do you say something earlier and risk escalation?

What do you guys think is best practice for when a crazy person is threatening someone who cannot defend themselves, but hasn’t turned violent yet?
