Made a Map of Shanghai Cafes & Restaurants

I exported Cafes and Restaurants trending on Xiaohongshu/RedNote, and saved them each to an Apple Maps list. So it's kind of a snapshot of places that locals currently like to visit.

Just click the link and save the lists to your own maps app! (This works only when you're in China. If your're outside, save them for later or check out the map on the third link below!)

The cool thing about Apple Maps in China is that it has all the local data from Dianping - Ratings, opening times, pictures, etc. Whereas Google Maps is usually pretty out of date.

Use claude to find restaurants with 套餐(taocan) nearby

Lunch menus are an affordable way to try new restaurants here.

And because I'm too lazy to scroll dianping and translate everything, I wrote a script for Claude/Codex that finds restaurants with taocan around me, based on dianping: github.com/seichris/dianping-nearby-restaurants-skill

Just throw it at your AI, give it your closest subway station. And tell it you're hungry.

Xiaohongshu has all the China content... Travel tips, restaurants, cafes, events, taobao gadgets... But it’s all in Chinese! So I build an app to help me search the RedNote in English.

Whatson.red

You simply search for any topic, and it will get a number of posts, translates them to English, and summarizes them into a brief blog post.

It publishes the blog posts by default, so everyone can enjoy the content. (You can opt-out in the settings.)

You can see the topics I searched so far on the blog. It's been super useful, so I thought I'd polish it up and share it on here. Let me know if anything doesn't run smoothly or is broken!

Also, one feature I want to add next is a map, to show xiaohongshu-recommended restaurants, cafes, etc first for Shanghai and then for other tier 1 cities.
