How did you know when your LO stopped needing help to fall asleep?

Just something I've been wondering as a FTM.

My little one is 18 months and I still nurse/rock to sleep.

How did you know when your baby stopped needing help?

How do you transition from nursing or rocking to, let's say, reading a book together?

I'm super curious to read your stories!

Night weaning - how and when, if at all?

My LO is soon 18mo and has never slept through the night. I sleep with him in the same room, he has a bedside crib and recently, thanks to advice in this wonderful group, I started taking him to bed with me when I see the night goes really bad (meaning he wakes more thus probably needs me more).

He still has 4 last molars to get out, and he gets super cranky while teething. Multiple wakeups, paracetamol doesn't necessarily help much.

As we're hitting this 18mo mark, I'm thinking if maybe soon I could attempt night weaning. But many questions arise:

- should I maybe wait for him to finish with all teeth, as the breast is an excellent way of soothing pain?

- if I wean, how to do it? Cold turkey? One by one? What are the methods that you tried yourselves?

- does night weaning actually improve nights?

He eats pretty decently during the day, we give him 5 meals/snacks, usually he eats every time, except for when he's teething or goes through a phase of crankiness (like when he learns new skills).

Thanks a lot in advance!
