From the journal of W.N.P. Barbellion (a pseudonym). He attempted to enlist for the British military at the start of World War I, only to find out from a confidential, sealed letter his doctor sent to the recruiter that he had been diagnosed with MS and had less than five years to live.
His diaries were published after his death at the age of 30 (though not before initially being rejected for a "lack of morals") and are considered to be some of the finest writing in any published diary, even earning the praise of H.G. Wells who wrote an introduction to the diaries.
