[General] Art appreciation post! Your favourite Backgrounds, Characters, Sprites …

Discussing tropes yesterday was a lot of fun and since a recent post about the art in Matsurika inspired me, I thought: let’s talk about Art.

So I’m here asking; :

  • who’s your Favourite Artist?
  • which game features your favourite art?
  • Favourite Background Arts?
  • UI Elements you love?
  • Artists you wish would do more art for games?

Or just anything you appreciate or don’t appreciate about art! (If you post CGs images please make sure to spoiler tag, though)

[General] Tropes you love or hate!

Checking through the search I saw the last general trope discussion was quite some time ago. So I’m here to warm up the nachos.

  • What are some tropes you love?

  • What are some tropes you hate?

  • Trope combinations you rarely see/want to see more?

I’ve been thinking on this recently when I ended up liking a character that didn’t really seem to be my type at first, but a combination of tropes made him oddly charming.

The tropes don’t need to be about the LI or MC themselves, it could also be plot tropes. I’m just curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

I wanted to hear some opinions on the topics of localisation and censorship.

Before explaining my question I want to highlight that I do not want to rehash the “omg woke people are trying to steal our Japanese media”-type of crap that we often read in anime forums. I do respect the work localisers do and without them my journey into Otome would have been a hard one.

However I want to find where the line is between a localisation, that adapts a media to a local market with trying its best to keep the original feeling … and hints or censorship that might slip in in between.

What would you consider “too big of a change” to be “faithful” to the original media?

Just an example of what I mean: My question comes up after writing a review on Tengoku Struggle, which I’ve only played in Japanese. While rehashing some of the stuff that has happened I recalled that the English version made a change in the text where >!The love interests threaten the heroine to rape her to threaten her!< (common route spoiler). I remember others saying that the localisation chose to “soften the blow” on that incident by >!changing the wording in a way along the lines of “roughing/beating her up”!< or something along those lines. And I can’t help but wonder if that was really a needed change or if it was a deliberate change made to made the characters less detestable, and essentially manipulating the player’s view of the characters in a way that was not originally intended.

It reminds me of what we used to call censorship when Naruto episodes had blood edited to look like sweat and “killing” was changed into “defeating”. All wording/image changes to “soften the blow”. So I’m here wondering, at what point is a change an issue for you?

Again, this is not to bash any of the localisation teams. (They do great work in a lot of ways, which I notice over and over again when I try to think of a way to proper translate a term I read in a game … )

I did not play the game in English and I can’t judge on the quality. This is just one example that came to mind because I’ve worked on a write up for the game and it’s fresh in my mind.
