Changes to Ontario Statutory Accident Benefits - July 1, 2026

As of July 1, 2026, Ontario changed its auto insurance rules to make most Statutory Accident Benefits optional rather than automatically included. Only basic medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care (plus examination costs) remain mandatory on every policy. Other vital coverages—like income replacement if you cannot work—can now be added or left out to change your price

Has anyone had their policy renew after July 1, 2026, and if so, what was your experience? Were you advised of how the price of your policy would change if you dropped those now-optional coverages? If you chose to keep those coverages, did it increase the policy premium? I've seen a sheet showing which coverages you can keep (or not keep), but there are no prices associated with the different categories.

Not an insurance person, so my apologies if any of my terminology is wrong.

Can't turn off tap on my debit card

I read about a scam that uses NFC today. Here are the details: NFC (Near Field Communication) is wireless technology that allows devices such as smartphones, payment cards, and payment terminals to communicate when they’re very close together. So, instead of stealing your physical bank card, the attackers capture NFC activity on an infected mobile phone and relay it in real time to a criminal-controlled device held against a contactless payment terminal, or an ATM that supports contactless cash withdrawals.

I tried to go to my bank's website to turn off tap (contactless payment), but it cannot be turned off. They suggested locking my card between uses, using an RFID case, or requesting a replacement card with no tap, but availability of those varies. You used to be able to turn off tap on your debit card. Why would the banks change that? It's certainly an added security feature if a PIN is required. Not that I think it will make any difference, but I am going to write to them about it.
