Flooding in Ottawa

Hey there,

My home was flooded on Canada Day because of the storm drain failures. There are a number of damages, furniture, personal items, flooring and walls. There is a line on my policy that says CAA water coverage 10k. Does this mean I only have 10k coverage? Edits:

info requested - yes, Ottawa flooding on Canada Day. There are over 3000 families affected

So, if I understand correctly, if my plumbing failed I would be completely covered but because the infrastructure is inadequate I have a limit? Please don't be rude, I just need to understand not be insulted.

Accident Forgiveness

Got myself into a situation regarding the accident forgiveness endorsement. So after almost 15 years of driving, I got into my first at fault accident back in January. It was an ice storm and my car slid into a parked car. I had an older car and it was totalled for just under 10k.
After accepting the settlement, I couldn’t afford to buy a car right after so decided to cancel my policy and call back in a few months once I bought a new car. The issue is now the insurer is not honouring the accident forgiveness as it goes only with my policy. Am I out of luck here? I’m going from 160 to over 550/month for car insurance! Shouldn’t the broker inform you of any consequences of cancelling this policy? If I knew about it before hand I would have done something to continue the policy. Would the ombudsman look into this?

Would appreciate any insight from anyone familiar with this issue I’m unfortunately dealing with.

Insurance won't give claims experience letter?

Can anyone help with next steps? We are switching our insurance from Intact to AMA, and AMA requires a claimed experience letter.

Intact said they'd get back to us in 24 hours. A week passed and nothing, so we called again. They flat out said that it's against their terms of service to provide a claims experience letter if the purpose is to switch insurance providers, and that our new insurance can obtain this if required.

AMA came back and said that's absolutely false; intact is legally required to provide this letter in demand as AMA has no way to access it.

We have emailed Intact to this effect and told them we expect this to be settled promptly or we will escalate, but they're ghosting us.

What are our next steps?

Edit to add, I could only select one flair but home insurance is also through them.

Insurance broker

Is it worth it to go through an insurance broker before I decide to stay with my current insurance company? My renewal is in 1 month and my premium have gone down by 20$ a month from current monthly cost. My husband and I are now both retired which was not the case last year.

Any input, info would be appreciated. Thanks

Claim Denied

My claim was denied because insurance company is saying EDR data and statements do not align. I was not at fault in this accident. I am now out a totaled car and liable for all expenses. What’re the odds I can get this claim overturned with legal help ?

Insurance notes

During the investigation, an engineer was assigned and their report showed that you were not moving or
moving slowly at impact. Your vehicle came to a stop before accelerating forward. Then your vehicle
stopped shy of the intersection, travelled back to a similar position, and was stationary before accelerating
a second time to impact.
Also, third party advised that he was turning at 30km/h and attempted to accelerate to avoid a collision.
The report showed that his speed before impact was 7km/h, and the vehicle was stationary for some
seconds before impact in a live lane traffic.

Need Information on Excluded Driver Endorsement (OPCF 28A)

Hello everybody.

I (22F) am from Ontario and have not been able to find the answer to some of my questions online for the Excluded Driver Endorsement (OPCF 28A).

I really just do not want to drive anymore. But from my research, if there are more vehicles in the house than one, the next person who has a license has to be the primary driver of that vehicle. I didn't want my license, but was pushed by my parents to get a G (in 2025).

At the moment, I just don't want to be burdened with the responsibility of driving or having a car, so I want to sign an OPCF 28A so I can be removed from the insurance policy, and then the secondary driver can be the primary driver of that car. I have already looked at the rules; I understand that signing an OPCF 28A means I cannot legally drive that vehicle while the endorsement is in effect, and I'm completely okay with that -- I don't want to drive or touch a car for 3-5+ years anyway.

My questions are listed below (and if this is not the correct place to ask or if there is somewhere more appropriate to ask these questions, please let me know):

  • How bad will it become if I have a long gap with no driving (3-5+ years)? More specifically, would it seem like I am a high-risk driver because I didn't drive for so long?

I have a clean record, but I don't want to spend money on a car I don't want to use. I don't want to drive either because I'd like to move to a walkable city and ideally have a WFH job. If I need to commute, I plan to use public transit. My only concern is if, years down the road, I absolutely need a car because of a future family or a job in an area without good public transit (which seems like a lot of North America, sadly).

With regards to the above, the OPCF 28A form says it will be harder to find insurance and premiums will increase in the future. I'm only worried about this if in the future I would absolutely need a car (future family in Ontario, a not public-transit-friendly job). I'm wondering how significant that increase is. The insurance in the GTA is so high, so this concerns me.

  • Will they treat me like an absolute new driver even after 25, so I'd have teenager-number insurance premiums?

  • Does the money I'd save now outweigh potentially higher premiums later?

  • If I am not insured in Ontario for several years, will insurers still recognize that I've held a G since whenever I got it, or do they mainly care about continuous insurance history?

  • Is there a point where the gap stops mattering? For example, is a 3-year gap viewed differently than a 10-year gap?

  • If I ever moved to another province and again, decided to have a future family there, etc. -- just a situation where a car is absolutely needed, would my gap of not driving affect insurance premiums in those provinces too? Or is this mainly an Ontario issue?

  • Does an OPCF 28A only apply to the specific policy I'm excluded from, or could it affect insurance on a future vehicle?

From what I understand, it seems like only the insurance policy for the vehicle I'm excluded from, but I could be wrong.

Anyways, thanks in advance if anyone is able to respond! If anyone has done anything similar, I'd love to hear how things went for you. I really appreciate it.

A family member wants to have their wedding/reception on our property. I'm fine with this. I contacted our home insurance and we don't have coverage for this type of thing. I told the family member we need celebration/wedding insurance outside of our home insurance.

They seem to be hesitant, think I am over reacting in having the extra insurance. Am I crazy? Over reacting?

New Broker - Advice Welcome

Hello everyone,

New broker here, just started at a company doing personal lines insurance. I had no prior experience in this industry but an opportunity came and luckily I was able to pass my RIBO exam and was fortunate enough to have pretty extensive training. I just survived my first week ‘live’ on the floor, taking calls and also working with walk-in clients.

Not going to lie, I had a bit of a mental breakdown on my first week lol the amount of information, the different company manuals, especially the new accident benefits reform that just went into place July 1st… my head was spinning! I just felt like after all that time training and so excited to learn a new industry - where I could potentially grow into a fulfilling career, I became extremely overwhelmed.

I did talk with my manager, and they have been great with support.

I guess what I’m asking is this normal? Lol How long until you felt more comfortable with the day-to-day?

Honestly any advice, or just some wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the ramble post. I just really want to succeed but I have a bit of a confidence issue and feel like I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself just after a week and a bit with my new role.

Thanks!

Next Path after CIP

I am a claims adjuster and finishing up my CIP this December. It took me four years of working, and I put everything I had into getting honors (not sure if that's just me being unnecessarily proud or if it'll actually get me more recognition).

Now I am feeling pretty burnt out, but I still want to get a second professional designation because CIP is becoming the norm.

What else should I go for? CRM doesn't seem to have much value in claims, and FCIP would be a long haul, especially since I want to take it easy now that I am over 40.

Are there any other certifications I could look into to help me stand out with all the other CIP holders out there?

Got in a hit and run, what can I do.

Hi everyone, I got in a hit and run last Thursday on the 401 and now insurance might make it 50/50, worried about this situation.

So last week some guy hits me near the 401/403 in mississauga and just drives off. i got his plate and drivers license, but he refused to give insurance. That when I should've called the opp again, but I screwed up cause I wasn't thinking properly. I filed a police report but it was self reported cuz no officer was actually there when it happened. now my insurance is telling me they're gonna call his insurance and hear his version too, and if our stories dont match up it might just get called 50/50, it just sad cause I don't think I can afford a new car or the insurance if it goes up.

i dont have a dashcam, no witnesses that i know of. this is literally my first accident ever so im kinda lost rn. Has this happened to anyone else? Does the fact that he fled even matter or do they not care. Also is there anything i should even be doing right now besides just waiting around, like can I get a lawyer or something? Fight that my insurance doesn't go up?

im 19 so this is all new to me, any advice really helps right now.

Auto insurance - Disputing Autoplus report

I have a unique situation. I was being quoted for new insurance and an autoplus report was showing me insured as an occasional driver on another policy and a not at fault accident from that policy.

Turns out this is my mom’s policy with Allstate, however I have not lived with her nor insured under a policy with her in 15+ years. Additionally the not at fault accident, clearly has her drivers license and not mine. This also appears to have appeared on my autoplus report more recently.

Allstate has provided two letters, one showing the last time I was actually insured as an occasional driver (years ago) and on saying I had nothing to do with the accident. Allstate also has confirmed no records in their system of why autoplus has this.

However I can’t really seem to find a number to call or a way to dispute this with autoplus. Any help appreciated!

I know it’s not impacting my report but would really like to see it sorted.

First minor conviction 27M

As title says I was lowered from a way higher clocked speed by an officer who dropped my ticket to a 85 on 70 and told me it would have no points to impact insurance but I am also insured on a vehicle for 1 year and this would be my first ever ticket received. I am aware of me not speeding next time as well and know I wouldn’t do it again but I am just wanting to know how bad (if it will or not at all) how bad the insurance hike would be as I also don’t have first minor conviction protection and am with cooperators.

I was also told by officer who was extremely nice to me about the whole situation to do either pay or early resolution but am unsure if early resolution would be ideal given the initial speed I was going.

Any knowledge that would help is appreciated!

Do we need a cert to work in insurance?

I have a bachelors in psycholgoy, however im raising my white lil flag and realizing I dont want to do a masters or phd for a decent paying job. So I decided to pivot into insurance because of the job stability and good finanicnal growth.

But here's where Im confused. Im from quebec and hoping to move to ontario. Ik the market in ontario is still competitive, however people keep telling me to apply to entry positions like claims adjusters and stuff and THEN they'll usually pay for my training in the AEC/AMF. But if the market is competitive, wouldn't it be better to get my AEC/AMF first and THEN apply to actually have a chance of getting a job?

Can my Ontario university force me to use their student insurance?

My parents don’t have private insurance plans, and prior to university, I’ve always been covered by OHIP and Healthy Smiles for health and dental care.

Unluckily for me, I’m a person with frequent dental issues despite daily brushing and flossing. I get at least 2 new cavities each year. Not to mention complications with my many previous fillings that often need fixing.

My university claims that without private insurance, I’m unable to opt-out of their student health and dental insurance because OHIP and the Canadian Dental Care Plan apparently don’t suffice. Now I pay $425 for student insurance each year as part of my tuition, $240 out of pocket yearly for my monthly medications, and couldn’t even afford to get all of my fillings done because the dental coverage amount ran out for the year. With government insurance, I wouldn’t have to pay a single thing. I don’t need chiropractic or physiotherapy coverage, and all the other fancy things this student insurance barely even covers yet claims is the better option than OHIP for.

So my question is, can my university legally force me to opt-in to their student insurance despite not having private insurance? Also, I’m aware that OHIP and the Canadian Dental Care Plan are reserved for people who otherwise don’t have access to insurance. $425 is a lot (to me) for that “access”!! Does the government still view it as having access even though you have to pay for it? How is that any different from claiming someone has access to private insurances like Manulife but just choose not to pay for it?

Aviva Journey Deactivation - Premium increased by 25% even after clocking in 1600 kms within 9 months

Hi Redditors, Aviva Journey is a total scam. They said that I have to complete minimum of 1000 kms in 12 months. I initially clocked first 1000 kms within first few months (I think 2 months or so). Then I took away all the tracking permissions from the app to stop recording my data. I received a notice a few weeks later that they would de-enroll me, I started using the app again and did around 1600 kms in total within 7-9 months of my first policy purchase date. I stopped using the app again (removed tracking permissions). I received a warning that I will get de-enrolled. I didn't take it seriously because I already was way above m the required 1000 km threshold.

But today, they de-enrolled me from the program and I received an updated insurance with a 25% increase in premiums. While I was supposed to get an 18% discount based on my driving behavior on renewal, I only got a 10% discount on my first enrollment of the program. I don't know why the hell they increased the premium by 25% if the initial premium discount was just 10%.

Is there any solution to this? I plan to call them but need some information from others too.

Also, what if I break the insurance insurance after completion of 9 months and move to TD? Would it be bad for my auto insurance history?

Total loss -Ontario

As above, my vehicle has been deemed a total loss in Ontario. A deer ran into the front of my car, the insurance company has made a settlement offer, I refused the first and they amended and made a second offer. I have two options, take the payout of 33,000 (ACV + TAX), or take the ACV (29000) - SALVAGE value (7500) which is about 21,500. I owe 28k on the loan, which I would of course pay the remaining balance. There are currently no comparable vehicles to use to value the vehicle myself.

I am still driving the car, I was advised to take it to their appraiser, and I was advised if the appraiser deems the car still drivable I can drive the car and I have a year to finalize the claim, although they seem to be in a rush for me to do so.

The damage is minimal although it was quoted at 22k, the body shop included parts like AC condenser etc that had absolutely no damage to them, and blending of paint etc (front bumper, grille hood, rad support are all cracked/dented), I can repair it myself very easily for around 2500$, and for the time being aesthetics are not important - I'm not worried about the small dents and scratches on the passenger side door etc from the deer punching my car on the way around

My question is related to the owner retain vehicle option - if the total loss is only on the consideration of economical reasons, can I retain the car without it being branded "salvage"?
