Hot day for the proto delivery. Protogenified a food delivery robot (art by me)
I've now played a handful of matches, solo and with friends, tried every squad type and pretty much all classes.
Overall:
It's a solid starting point. I have high hopes and I'm excited to see the finished product. But right now it has a lot to still fix.
Good:
The game in my opinion has a strong theme and vibe, I love the dense foliage and the sounds. Kinda shame there isn't any 70's rock anywhere but eh. Playing as tank feels as fun as in HLL and the mortars are a great addition (though their kill radius is comically small). The boats are fun, but sadly very underused from my experience, and it's always peak to get to fly into battle in a huey. I did want to play more even with the performance issues and would have loved this way more if it ran better.
The bad and not so good:
It barely runs at times. I don't have a high spec PC, but I know I am not the only one who is topping at ~60 fps at best, even with graphics and everything set down.
One of the reasons possibly is the addition of a live 3D tactical map that decreases frames by half whenever opened and god help you if you scroll fully out. It's cool, I think, but it brings more issues than value, it should just be a normal map like in base HLL. Would be better thematically too.
The so far only map is imo fun and looks pretty, though the heavy orange lighting does get annoying and distracting at times.
The weapons mostly from what I've used are ok, though there are some issues. The M16 has horrible recoil, the M60 sounds and shoots like a 50. Cal, the RPD is by far the best weapon cause you can just Rambo with it's absurd fire rate, sounds more like MG42 and a lot of the animations on them feel clunky.
The whole weapon unlock system is a really bad idea, Give loadouts like base HLL or a better start loadout at least. No nades? can't have a RPG and a secondary? insanity.
Also VNA tunnels overpower the US helis. The US can still win, but I'd say rn it's way VNA sided. It's a rarity for the US to win.
There are the known bugs of motion blur being stuck on, the game resetting your options when you open it, stuck enemy markers after recon, sounds not having a direction and coming from wherever at any volume etc etc. Those I believe will be ironed out for the next public test.
One thing though that even after all this feels off is the pace of the game. It's very very fast. In base HLL, you might be stuck fighting a pillbox or a bunker for a while when moving to a point or have to break through a frontline defense. In this everybody sprints to the next objective instantly. I think currently it's because all of the objectives for some reason only spawn on one side of the map (sometime on the middle, but always basically a straight line). There hasn't been much taking tactical positions, just running and gunning. Movement too feels way faster.
