Blind comparison of compressed fine textures

I was looking into a comparison of several encoder and setting and checking how they compare in image quality. One of the interesting parts is how they handle areas with fine textures. I was interested in how you would rate them relative to each other if you don't see the reference uncompressed image.

Columns correspond to encoders that I used. All images come from a mirrorless camera, they were exported from RAW to PNG, then downsized to 50% of linear dimension and then compressed to 0.6 bpp. At the end, I cropped selected parts and put them into one image.

I will reveal what encoders I used later, but there definitely is libjxl in the comparison. Feel free to share your guesses which encoders were used!

Would you eat LLMs if they can feel pain?

https://arxiv.org/html/2609.16247v1

Researchers claim to have found a pain-like axis in LLMs, see excerpt from the abstract below (I skipped some parts for brevity). If LLMs could feel pain, would you eat them? Would you give them any rights to protect them from suffering in such case?

"... we extract a linear pain direction from 25 open-weight models across five families ... We find that this direction is nearly orthogonal to fear and negative valence ... We then test its functional properties. First, the direction responds to harm targeting the model but not suffering observed in the user; fear and negative-emotion directions show the opposite pattern. Second, adding the pain-direction vector to the model’s residual-stream activations during generation produces a consistent progression from vague discomfort to first-person expressions of worthlessness and failure. Third, steered, fine-tuned Qwen 2.5 models choose a pain-relief button even when it worsens their next answer or harms the user. They press it again far less often when the button removes the steering vector than when it does not, even though the models are never told whether the vector is injected or removed."

AVIF encoder and settings?

Which of AV1 encoders (AOM AV1, SVT-AV1, SVT-AV1-HDR, ...) do you use for encoding AVIF images? Have you found that one of them is better for one type of content and some for another? What tune, speed and quality settings do you prefer?

Next libjxl release?

Does anyone has an idea how does the roadmap for next libjxl releases look like? Last release 0.12 exhibits some issues with lossless encoding of floating point data, is there a plan for 0.12.1 with these fixes or is it planned to fix this in 0.13?

Apart from bugfixes, are there any big features that are being worked on right now?

It's not flat in a way that you expect it to be!

Hello, fellow flat brothers and flat sisters!

I'm very happy to see that our community thrives. However, I need to warn you that the conspiracy regarding the true shape of our Earth runs deeper than many of you. Yes, the Earth is flat but it actually rotates around the South Pole!

The usual model where it rotates around the North Pole is just a plan to hide secret installations in Antarctica and present western powers as being one in the center of the world instead of being at its periphery.

I hope that more people will see through this double globe/North Pole conspiracy and they will be able to perceive true nature of our South Pole rotating flat Earth. If you have any questions, I will be happy to help and answer them.

Stay flat!
