Everyone Who Walks Them

There is a moment that happens to almost every

trekker in the Simien Mountains,

It usually happens on the second morning,

somewhere near the Imet Gogo escarpment. The sun

is just clearing the plateau. A gelada troop is moving

across the meadow below you. The cliff drops more

than a kilometre into a valley that looks like it belongs

in another world. And for a long moment, you forget to

take a photograph. You just stand there

That moment is what we do.s with 3-metre

wingspans, and some of the most dramatic highland

scenery on the African continent,

Our trekking packages range from 3 days to 15 days,

departing from Gondar:

-3-Day Simien Trek (perfect introduction, includes

Imet Gogo)

-4-Day Simien Trek (our most popular -

Geech plateau)

- 6-Day Simien Trek (full wilderness immersion,

Chennek wildlife zone)

- 10-Day Ras Dejen Summit (4,550m--- highest

point in Ethiopia)

-15-Day Northern Ethiopia Grand Circuit

Every trek includes our own certified guides, armed

scout, porter, all meals, camping gear, park fees, and

Gondar transfers.

Tell us your dates and we will design your

perfect Simien itinerary.

experience possible.

When you message us, Tesema answers. When you ask about the trail conditions, the answer comes

Experienced a traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony (Buna) in the Simien Mountains – one of the most beautiful rituals I’ve ever seen

While trekking in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains with Simien Ethio Tours, our local guide invited us to a traditional coffee ceremony with a family near camp. It quickly became one of the highlights of the whole trip.

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony (called Buna) isn’t just about the drink — it’s a slow, meaningful ritual of hospitality, community, and respect that’s been practiced for centuries in Ethiopia (where coffee originated!).

How it works:

Fresh green beans are washed, then roasted over charcoal right in front of you. The host waves the fragrant smoke toward guests as a welcome.

Beans are hand-ground, then brewed in a beautiful clay jebena pot.

Incense burns and fresh grass is laid out — the whole space smells amazing.

Coffee is served in three rounds from the same pot:

Abol (1st) — Strongest, for energy & health

Tona (2nd) — Milder, perfect for deep conversations

Baraka (3rd) — Lightest, brings blessings and peace

We sat for nearly an hour, sipping, snacking on popcorn, and hearing stories. It felt like being welcomed into someone’s home, not just a tourist activity.

If you’re planning a trip to Ethiopia — whether Simien trekking, Lalibela, or the Historic Route — make sure a real coffee ceremony is on your list. It’s authentic, heartfelt, and unforgettable.

Has anyone else participated in a Buna ceremony? What was your experience like? Best paired with what else in Ethiopia?

Photos attached (roasting, jebena, the full setup, and mountain views):

More info & tours: simienethiotours.com (they organize these as part of their packages)

Would love to hear your thoughts or coffee ritual stories from around the world! ☕🇪🇹

Just back from trekking the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia – Africa's most underrated epic hike? (Simien Ethio Tours experience)

I recently did a 4-day trek in the Simien Mountains with Simien Ethio Tours and it absolutely blew me away. Often called the "Roof of Africa," this UNESCO site has jaw-dropping escarpments, deep canyons, and wildlife you won't find anywhere else – Gelada baboons up close, Walia ibex, and even Ethiopian wolves if you're lucky.

What made it special:

Local guides who grew up in the area – they knew every hidden viewpoint and shared incredible stories.

Small group vibe (not crowded tourist herds).

Camping under insane starry skies with traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies.

Challenging but doable hikes with mule support for gear.

We started from Gondar, which is also worth exploring for its castles. Combined it with Lalibela rock churches on a longer trip – mind-blowing history.

Ethiopia gets overlooked for safaris in East Africa, but the trekking + culture combo here is world-class. Budget-friendly compared to similar destinations too.

Has anyone else trekked Simien recently? How was security/safety? Worth adding Omo Valley or Danakil next time?

Photos attached (highly recommend viewing full res!):

[Attach 5-8 photos: dramatic landscapes, wildlife, group at viewpoint, local interaction]

Our site for anyone interested: simienethiotours.com (full itineraries from 3-15 days, custom options available)

Would love to hear your Ethiopia stories or tips!

Why I Think the Simien Mountains Are One of Africa's Most Underrated Trekking Destinations

As a local guide, I've seen many visitors arrive with few expectations and leave saying it was the highlight of their trip to Ethiopia. The combination of dramatic landscapes, unique wildlife, and welcoming communities makes it a truly memorable trekking destination.

What underrated hiking destinations have impressed you the most?

u/Sea_Maintenance_1592 — 7 days ago

These monkeys exist nowhere else on Earth.

One of the best parts of my job is watching visitors see Gelada baboons for the first time.

At first they think they're ordinary monkeys.

Then they notice hundreds of them peacefully grazing like sheep across the mountain meadows.

They're found only in the Ethiopian Highlands and spend most of their lives on the ground eating grass. Their red chest patch has earned them the nickname "bleeding-heart monkeys."

They're surprisingly calm around hikers, which allows incredible wildlife photography without disturbing them.

If you enjoy wildlife, the Simien Mountains are one of Africa's hidden treasures.

Have you ever seen an animal that exists only in one country?

I often get asked, "When is the best time to trek the Simien Mountains?"

I often get asked, "When is the best time to trek the Simien Mountains?"

The answer depends on the experience you're looking for.

October–March: Clear skies, dry trails, and the best mountain views. Great for multi-day trekking and photography.

June–September: The landscape becomes incredibly green, waterfalls are flowing, and the scenery is stunning. Expect muddy trails and occasional rain, but it's a beautiful time if you don't mind the weather.

Personally, I enjoy both seasons because they offer completely different experiences.

Have you visited the Simien Mountains? Which season would you choose?

I guide in Ethiopia's Simien Mountains, and this view still leaves me speechless

Every time I reach the edge of the escarpment at sunrise, I stop for a moment. The clouds drift through the valleys, Gelada baboons begin their day, and the cliffs seem to stretch forever.

I've guided here for years, but the feeling never fades.

Many people planning an African trip think only about safaris. The Simien Mountains offer something completely different—high-altitude trekking, dramatic landscapes, endemic wildlife, and peaceful trails without the crowds.

If you're planning a trip to Ethiopia, I'd be happy to answer any questions about trekking, camping, wildlife, or the best time to visit.

Question: What's the most breathtaking mountain landscape you've ever seen?

A recent review from a guest after trekking in Ethiopia's Simien Mountains

As a local trekking guide in Ethiopia, I always aim to give my guests more than just a hike—I want them to leave with unforgettable memories and the confidence to continue exploring the country.

A guest recently wrote this after our trek:

"Tevan was a great guide, very attentive and caring throughout the experience. His communication was professional, and our trek in the Simien Mountains was carefully tailored to our needs. The landscapes were breathtaking, the food exceeded expectations, and I would recommend Tevan without any hesitation."

Reading feedback like this reminds me why I love what I do.

If anyone is planning a trip to the Simien Mountains National Park, has questions about trekking routes, camping, wildlife, or logistics, I'd be happy to help. Whether you book with me or not, I'm always glad to share local advice.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to welcome more travelers to this incredible part of Ethiopia!

Simien Mountains National Park

Most people think of safaris when they think about Africa, but the Simien Mountains National Park feels totally different.

Huge cliffs, dramatic valleys, high-altitude trekking, and wildlife you can literally walk beside. Seeing hundreds of Gelada baboons in the morning mist never gets old.

Some camps sit above 3,000 meters, and sunrise in the mountains can look unreal. The trails between Sankaber, Gich, and Chennek are especially beautiful for multi-day trekking.

What I like most is that it still feels authentic and uncrowded compared to many famous hiking destinations around the world.

If you enjoy nature, hiking, photography, or mountain culture, Simien deserves more attention internationally.

I’m curious — what’s the most underrated national park you’ve visited?

Cliff Dwellers of the Simien Mountains 🏔️

High above the dramatic escarpments of the Simien Mountains, one of Africa’s rarest and most majestic animals calls these sheer cliffs home — the Walia Ibex.

Endemic only to this small stretch of northern Ethiopia, these incredible mountain goats are true survivors. With their impressive curved horns and remarkable agility, they navigate impossible rocky terrain that few other creatures can.

Once pushed to the brink of extinction (with only ~150 individuals left in the 1960s), conservation efforts helped their numbers recover. Today, they face new challenges — but they remain one of the ultimate highlights for anyone visiting the Simien Mountains.

If you dream of seeing these majestic animals in the wild, standing on the edge of Africa’s most spectacular landscape, we’re ready to take you there.

Why the Simien Mountains are Africa's most underrated trekking destination — from someone who guides

Standing at 4,533m on Ras Dashen, watching a troop of 200+ Gelada baboons graze on a 1,000m cliff edge while the Ethiopian sunrise turns the escarpment gold — this is what most travelers miss when they pick Kilimanjaro over the Simiens.I've been guiding trekkers through the Simien Mountains and Gondar circuit for years, and here's what makes this route unmatched:🏔️ The Simiens — UNESCO World Heritage site, home to three endemic species (Gelada, Walia ibex, Ethiopian wolf) found nowhere else on Earth

Gondar — the "Camelot of Africa" with 17th-century Fasil Ghebbi castles, just 100km from the park gate

Debre Berhan Selassie Church — those famous winged-angel ceilings you've seen on travel feeds

Trekking range — day hikes from Buyit Ras (3,260m) to full 8-day traverses to Ras DashenAMA about routes, scout/guide requirements, altitude prep, or the Gondar–Simien combo. Happy to share what works and what to avoid.

Why the Simien Mountains are Africa’s most underrated trekking destination

After guiding many travelers in Ethiopia, I still believe the Simien Mountains are one of the most underrated trekking destinations in the world.

You can experience:

huge mountain cliffs

local culture

fewer tourists than Kilimanjaro or Nepal

Most travelers are surprised by how beautiful and peaceful the mountains are.
