Help! Someone who has the Japanese version of Storm Bringer

I'm translating Strom Bringer from English to my own language. And I need to know something. I heard that in the Japanese version, Chuuya’s hat is simply referred to as a “black hat,” and its specific style is never officially stated. However, the hat looks like a porkpie hat, and in the English version it is also written as “porkpie hat.”

I wanted to know whether I should just write it as “black hat” in my own language. Could someone who has read the original Japanese novel or is sure about it clarify whether it is officially stated that his hat is a porkpie hat or not?

Where can I find BSD Guidebooks?

I see people talking about them. But I can't find them anywhere. Also I can't buy them in Amazon (country limited) so can someone tell me what does that book have? Or is there any website that I can read them online?

My thoughts on a theory about Chuuya (Strom Bringer spoilers)

I remember reading someone’s theory once that Chuuya’s original ability wasn’t gravity at all, but actually the ability to amplify other abilities.

The theory came from N’s explanation in Storm Bringer about a boy with a self-contradicting skill who could amplify the abilities of anyone he touched and eventually created a singularity by applying that ability to himself.

I honestly really liked that theory. But I think there’s a contradiction here. Not one that completely disproves it — I still think it could be possible — just not confirmed.

First, I think this part is pretty solid based on the text:

When N shows another Chuuya to the Chuuya we know, he says:

«“Allow me to introduce you to the original you. The owner of the self-contradicting skill.”»

From this, it seems that Chuuya originally possessed a self-contradicting ability.

(Quick reminder: a self-contradicting ability is a type of ability first discovered by a German researcher; when applied to itself, it can independently create a singularity.)

Up to this point, I think everything is directly supported by the text.

Now here’s where I start theorizing:

Since N also states that one person can only possess one ability, I personally think Chuuya’s original ability may not have been gravity itself. Instead, it may have been some unknown self-contradicting ability.

Then, through military experimentation, they may have used that self-contradicting ability to create a gravity-type singularity.

And since singularities seem to generate enormous (possibly limitless) energy, maybe the gravity manipulation ability we currently associate with Chuuya is actually the result of the singularity itself — meaning his gravity ability is powered by the singularity, while his original ability was something else.

That’s the part where I mostly agree with that theory.

But the part I’m not convinced about is the claim that Chuuya was literally the same boy N talked about — the boy who could amplify other abilities.

Because on page 142 of the English Yen Press version of the light novel, N says this:

«“This self-referencing continued nonstop as he endlessly amplified his own skill. The resulting infinite loop of energy violated the principles of special abilities and created a singularity. The excess energy was converted into mass, which created a high density warp in space. The boy was sucked into the giant whirlpool of gravity and taken away to the other side, never to return again.”»

This is where I hesitate.

The text says the boy was swallowed by a giant gravitational whirlpool and never returned.

If we apply real-world logic, gravity at that scale should crush a human body completely. That wouldn’t leave behind a normal boy who later becomes the vessel of a singularity.

But this is also BSD, not physics.

And importantly — the text never explicitly says “he died.”

So I can think of a few possibilities:

  1. That boy was never Chuuya in the first place. He was simply an example, or maybe an earlier military experiment that failed before they moved on to Chuuya.

  2. “Never returned” might not literally mean death. Maybe he survived in some altered state and was later used as Arahabaki’s vessel — weakened, transformed, or dependent on life support, similar to the Chuuya inside the cylinder. Though it's just a thought, a theory.

(Another reminder: we still don’t know with certainty whether the Chuuya we know is fully human. Even Dazai basically says there’s no way to know for sure. And based on the ending, human Chuuya seems more likely — but it’s still intentionally ambiguous. We also still don’t know for certain which Chuuya was the original and which one was the clone.)

So I feel like N intentionally left out information. Sometimes he even lied. So we can't trust that man at all.

At this point we still don’t know for sure whether Chuuya is human, whether gravity is truly his original ability, or whether the singularity itself became his ability.

But I still think that theory is really interesting.

Personally, I think the idea that Chuuya’s original ability wasn’t gravity manipulation could actually make sense, because N introduces the Chuuya inside the cylinder as the owner of a self-contradicting skill. That would mean the singularity they created originated from a self-contradicting ability.

(Since a person can have only one ability)

Because of that, I personally think Chuuya may have originally possessed some kind of self-contradicting ability — we just don’t know what that ability actually was.

The part I’m less convinced about is the claim that his ability was definitely the exact same amplification ability N described in the example.

I haven’t read every fandom source and I’m not deeply involved in the fandom either, but I came across this theory one day and decided to make a post about my own thoughts on it. If you’ve already seen these ideas somewhere else, or if this feels repetitive and boring, sorry 😅 I feel like I repeated something two times, didn't I?
