Going to Hajj w/ mom, she can walk a few blocks but nothing more. She will need a wheelchair. How does wheelchair work?

flying back to US from Europe. The connecting airport (ORD) makes you retrieve your checked bags and check them in again. I want to see my friends in Chicago and miss my last leg of my flight. and make my own arrangements home. Has anyone ever done this before?
