Is the iPhone camera’s close-up focus actually worse now?

I feel like I’m losing it. With my older iPhones, I could snap sharp close-ups easily. With my current one, it’s a constant battle.
If I bring the phone near an object, it aggressively auto-switches to "Macro Mode," which often looks grainy. If I turn off Macro, the main lens just refuses to focus, leaving everything a blurry mess.
I know the sensors are bigger now, but did we really trade "point-and-shoot" usability for this? Is anyone else struggling with this, or do you have any tricks to get sharp close-ups without the lens-switching headache?
