Looking to buy a VW Scirocco – What should I watch out for?

Hey everyone,

Greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina

I’m planning to buy a VW Scirocco soon (photo attached). I’ve loved the styling of these for a long time, but before pulling the trigger, I’d love to get some real-world advice from owners and enthusiasts.

Car description from the seller:

SPECS: Diesel, 2.0, year 2011, 290.000km, 103kW

Price: 5250 euros/6,223 USD

VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI

The car is in excellent mechanical condition. The minor service was done 5,000 km ago, the clutch kit has been replaced, and the suspension is tight with no knocks or immediate investment needed.

Cosmetically, there are a few minor bodywork imperfections that do not affect the drive or functionality of the vehicle.

The car has been regularly maintained, drives great, and is completely ready for daily use.

A few specific questions I have:

  • Engine Choice: Which engines have proven to be the most reliable long-term (TDI vs. TSI)? Any specific engine codes or year models I should aim for or avoid completely?
  • Common Issues: What are the absolute must-check items during an inspection and test drive? Any known electrical gremlins, frameless window issues, or suspension quirks?
  • Maintenance & Costs: How do running costs and parts availability compare to a standard Mk6 Golf?
  • Daily Driving: How is it as a daily driver regarding visibility, practical boot space, and long-trip comfort?

Any tips, warnings, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
