Simkins Golf Classic honors Greensboro legends who defied segregation
“Five years before the Greensboro Four sat down at Woolworth’s lunch counter, the Greensboro Six were arrested for golfing while Black.”
My cover story in today’s YES! Weekly is about the civil rights legend the upcoming Dr. George C. Simkins Jr. Golf Classic that raises money for the International Civil Rights Center & Museum is named after. The Greensboro Six were arrested because they wanted to use a golf course that didn’t stink from the Buffalo Creek treatment plant and the open landfill that became Bingham Park.
Some legal scholars believe Simkins v Greensboro did as much to overturn Plessy as Brown v Board of Education did.
