Be careful in public especially late at night!

I just had a situation at the Harris Teeter on Pisgah Church. I’m a 25 year old girl and ran to HT to grab a couple of items I needed. I noticed a middle aged man dressed in all black come from around the building and heading into the store as I was walking into the store from the parking lot. I noticed immediately and thought it was strange he just came from the side/back of the building and wasn’t parked in the store lot. However, I noted it and told myself to stay vigilant. I walked to the desert isle, realized I didn’t need any of that, walked to the wine isle, grabbed the typical wine I get, and then went to grab a mouthwash. I noticed the same man was slowly trailing behind me, empty handed, not actually grabbing anything and looking in random areas that you’d normally look with the intention to grab something (beer isle, seafood, butcher section?). He just had both hands in his pockets and occasionally we’d make eye contact because I kept looking at him as I noticed he could possibly be trailing me. I understand that people are allowed to look around and not actually pick things up, but a grocery store trip at 10pm without a clear intention of what you’re coming to grab? A bit sketchy. So after our last eye contact, I decided immediately that I’m going to leave quickly but also ask the security guard to watch me walk to my car because I feel eerie.

All of this to say, if you feel vulnerable or like your an easy target for trafficking or kidnapping, please stay vigilant and do not be afraid to ask someone to walk you to your car if you’re concerned. He very well could have been a normal guy just bored and exploring a grocery store, however, I have noticed a ton of strange activity in Greensboro (my MIL was surrounded by a group of masked men in broad daylight outside of the target on Lawndale recently). Stay aware and stay off your phone when in public alone!!!

George Hartzman on Data Centers in Greensboro and a $50 million Parking Deck

Before joining City Council, Tammi Thurm served as CFO and Vice President for companies owned by downtown developer Randall Kaplan, whose wife is former Congresswoman Kathy Manning.

She worked for his Elm Street businesses for more than a decade before being elected to Council.

Since joining Council, she has overwhelmingly voted for tax and fee increases, a massive, ~$50 million underused parking deck for Kaplan and Manning's nonexistent Elm Street hotel project, and development and infrastructure which benefited projects associated with her former employers.

Randall Kaplan has financially supported her campaigns.

Kathy Manning has also contributed to her campaign committee.

Then there's the parking; Parking fees increased, free lots became paid lots, and according to the city's financial statements discussed in one analysis, the Parking Facilities Fund still required General Fund support, due to the decks Thurm voted for.

Thurm is responsible for a lot of the parking fee problems downtown small business owners have faced from the white elephant parking deck she pushed on Greensboro's taxpayers for her 'former' bosses.

Now consider data centers.

Thurm voted against even beginning a moratorium process, along with Hugh Holsten, Marikay Abuzuaiter, Denise Turner Roth, who recused after writing an op-ed in the News & Record without disclosing "her affiliations with various companies and groups associated with artificial intelligence" and TREBIC member Adam Marshall.

And taxes?

Thurm voted for a 18.7% property tax increase and 11.4% higher water and sewer rates.

NC A&T: Please Do Not Bring the Food Delivery Robots Back

Apparently Starship pulled its delivery robots off U.S. college campuses this summer, which is why the little things have disappeared from A&T.

Good.

Now Im seeing that some other universities are already replacing Starship with different robot tcompanies, and I would like to formally put my foot down before somebody at NC A&T gets any ideas:

No. We do not need Robot 2.0.

These things primarily benefit students who want a burrito delivered 900 feet without leaving the dorm.

Meanwhile, everyone else gets six-wheeled refrigeraters wandering around sidewalks, crosswalks, entrances, and roads trying to figure out how traffic works.

And before anyone asks: yes, I have beef with the robots.
I hit one once.

I was making a turn, the stupid little thing was crossing, and instead of continuing through the crossing it apparently decided that right in front of my moving car was an excellent place to stop and contemplate its existence. Had it just continued moving predictably, there would have been no problem.

So yes, perhaps there is some personal history here.
But my position remains: the robots are gone. Let them stay gone.

Other schools can have their adorable autonomous DoorDash coolers. We survived before them. We will survive after them.

A&T, if you are currently “exploring alternative delivery options,” I am begging you to explore the option where students simply walk to get their Chick-fil-A.

Greensboro demands 32-month data center moratorium. City Council grants 6 months.

Greensboro residents demanded a 32-month moratorium on data center development. Some demanded a ban, full-stop. But Greensboro City Council voted to extend their initial 4-month data center moratorium to 6 months, while thanking residents for their input, which they promised to consider.

The final motion fell over two years short of what residents demanded.

The public hearing on the moratorium extended over two days. Hundreds of residents packed council chambers and nearly 50 residents spoke to demand a meaningful pause on data center construction. No speakers advocated against a moratorium, or for a shorter moratorium.

At least 13 other cities and 11 counties have passed data center moratoriums of at least one year in duration. Greensboro’s new 180-moratorium is the shortest of any city’s in the state, except Charlotte. The moratorium will only apply to data centers with electric power demands over 10 megawatts.

Was already pretty done with goodwill but...

Yeah, done to death, I know, but very once in a while I find something nice at the one on Lawndale by target.

Well, DID, anyway... I was in the area and decided to pop in and discovered they have now raised the price of a shirt to $8.99.

Unreal.

Proposed City Budget Awards Police Department Additional $10.7 million

Despite public dissatisfaction with the Greensboro Police Department—with regard to the unpopular new police chief, Officer Lewis Wyatt’s recent killing of resident Said Ezzine, and the department’s provocative social media habits—the City Council is preparing to funnel more money and resources to the police than ever before.

The budget for “Public Safety” is increasing by over 20.5 million dollars.

The police budget alone increasing by over 10.7 million dollars—nearly 10 percent.

Meanwhile, services such as Cemetery Operations and Housing and Neighborhood Development are having their budgets cut.

More than a quarter of the entire city budget goes to “Public Safety.” This is nearly half of the total General Fund expenditures.

The police department is the largest single line item in the budget, after the “Water Resources Enterprise Fund,” which is funded by residents through our water bills.

The police department is also receiving the greatest increase in staffing—a total of 30 personnel. The increase in employees for “Public Safety” is more than all the other service areas combined.

While the police are set to receive record funding, important items remain unfunded. As the City Manager himself notes, “Major needs remain in areas such as employee health insurance, deferred maintenance, and requested service enhancements, and this recommendation does not fully fund all of them.”

Spay/Neuter Community Help!!!

I have a question for this community/county, and I’m hoping we can start a conversation.

All I seem to see on Nextdoor is people trying to rehome dogs and cats. I’m a huge animal advocate and volunteer my time at the shelter and with other local organizations, and I see firsthand how overwhelming this crisis has become.

We will NEVER adopt or rehome our way out of this problem.

We truly cannot continue taking in accidental litters. Dogs and cats are being euthanized at extremely high rates because there simply aren’t enough homes, fosters, or resources for the number of animals coming into shelters.

GCAS has taken in 2,000 animals since June. That number should stop all of us in our tracks.

I’m asking: Is anyone willing to help spread the word about why spaying and neutering is so important?

If we can reach one person who decides to spay or neuter their pet, that can prevent an entire litter from being born into an already overwhelmed system. One conversation can save lives.

Right now, I try to share information on Nextdoor about affordable spay/neuter resources, but I know we need to reach people beyond the people who are already involved in animal welfare.

How do we reach backyard breeders? How do we reach people who don’t realize what is happening in our shelters? How do we get affordable spay/neuter resources in front of the people who need them most?

I would genuinely love to connect with anyone who has ideas, wants to help educate the community, or has experience with outreach.

This isn’t about judging people. It’s about preventing animals from being born into a situation where there may not be a home for them.

We need the community’s help. If we work together and reach people one person at a time, we can prevent animals from entering the shelter system in the first place. And ultimately, that saves lives. ❤️🐾

ADHD/ADD Testing in Greensboro

During my last meeting with my psychiatrist, she recommended that I get tested for ADHD since I've been struggling to stay motivated/lacking focus while working in graduate school. She had recommended Carolina Attention Specialists, which would have been perfect, except my insurance did not cover it. As I said, I'm currently in graduate school, so I don't really have extra money to pay for out-of-network testing. The platform my insurance uses to show providers in-network is absolutely terrible and did not provide any actual useful information as to which providers can test for ADHD/ADD. I like the idea of the QbTest for evaluation, so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for testing that uses this or other evidence-based psychometric testing in Greensboro or the surrounding area?

Good place to host a board game club?

Me and my boyfriend are considering doing a Catan club for young adults, we are trying to figure out where we could host it. Right now we are considering the library or coffee shops like Borough or Backtable, but we don't know if they'd have tables big enough+ it would be hard to guarantee tables are available since the game requires a lot of room. Also if we were at the library, it might be disruptive to other library guests since we'd want it to be more of like a fun hangout rather than a focused game. Any suggestions?

Scotch Bonnet Peppers & Basil to give!

Hey everyone! I’ve got two fruiting Scotch Bonnet pepper plants and they have been popping off! Any local cooks or chefs want any? I’m not looking to sell them, just want to give to the community and reach out to other gardeners and cooks.

I also have multiple Basil bushes that need to be trimmed and I can only make so much pesto 😆

DM if anyone would like some!

city of gso attempting to scam Low-Income Homeowner Assistance Program eligibility

careful out there folks. our taxes pay their salaries but they most definitely do not work for us. question everything. lied twice, called out twice. then magically i was approved.

this is the actual email chain, exactly:

city of gso:

Dear,

The Greensboro Housing and Neighborhood Development Department regrets to inform you that your application for the Low Income Homeowner Assistance Program was ineligible due to the following:

Does not meet income requirement

Calculated gross income is $xx,xxx which is over the $51,250 threshold for a one-person household.

me:

It absolutely is not. The actual income is in the $xxk range based on the 1040 final after deductions.

city of gso:

Hello,

I looked at your application again and you are correct; I did calculate your income incorrectly and I apologize for that. Self-employment uses net income, instead of gross income so yours would have been $xx,xxx.

However, once I moved to the next step, I learned that you did not appear on the tax roll until 2021 and the requirement is that you must be on it since 2020. You will be eligible to apply next year if the program is approved. I have attached a copy of the tax roll and the link for you to have access at any time.

me:

Show me in writing the documentation or web link to the 2020 requirement.

city of gso:

I very much apologize and appreciate you pointing out my errors. I have completed the review of your application and sent it on for further approvals. Please know that I am here to answer any additional questions or make any changes if needed.

Thank you and I appreciate your patience.

Mayor Pro Tem Denise Roth recuses herself from data center votes due to “perceived” conflict of interest

At the start of Greensboro City Council’s public hearing on a proposed data center moratorium, Mayor Pro Tem Denise Roth announced she will recuse herself from future votes related to the moratorium and any forthcoming data center ordinance.

Roth said the recusal was made “to avoid even the perception of a conflict of interest” and “to protect the integrity of the process and public confidence in the decisions Council ultimately makes.” She insisted, “I do not have an actual or direct conflict of interest.”

The recusal comes after months of public frustration with the at-large council member. Roth retains multiple leadership and advisory positions with organizations advocating for data center and AI development. These include roles with the AI Trust Foundation; CEG Solutions, which develops infrastructure strategies for data centers; Commonweal Ventures, whose clients include surveillance corporation Palantir; and the local campus development organization Gateway Research Park.

Gateway Research Park describes itself as “a catalyst for university research, innovation, and economic development.” The organization advocated for the development of a data center on the campus of NC A&T. In a July 25, 2022 letter of support for the project, executive director Jim Westmoreland stated that the data center “received unanimous project support and endorsement from our Board of Directors [as] of February 1, 2022.”

Denise Roth joined Gateway Research Park’s board in January 2022 and remains on the board to this day.

One speaker at the hearing highlighted the connection. This elicited a rebuttal from Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter, who said “Mayor Pro Tem was not on that board when that vote was taken. That was clarified earlier.”

It is unclear what clarification the Mayor was referencing. Mayor Pro Tem Roth had not “clarified” the timing of her membership on the Gateway Research Park board, and her public record of her experience shows she was on the Gateway Research Park board when they advocated for the data center, when City Council voted to award the data center $530,359 in incentives, and when she pushed for data centers as a councillor, against public opposition.
