Can you recommend name of films that we can start with, and if possible, where? Any PH films that takes inspiration from him? Thank you in advance for your insights!

Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam updated review

The film’s central tragedy just hits me personally —my fear of the systematic erasure of a queer partner when your partner dies (regardless if it's because of HIV or other debilitating disease):

° to be barred from the hospital when your partner is in critical condition

° to be asked by the family not to be visible during the interment or be called as just his best friend or worst, just a close colleague or friend

° to be denied of your partner's ashes

° to be cut off completely by the family after death

Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam is more than a movie about HIV/AIDS Awareness, but for me who's been with my partner for 20 years, is an act of reclamation for those in a long term gay relationship. I really hope watchers will not miss this point. That this rewrites a tragic reality so a surviving partner can finally take their rightful place beside the person they loved. I was crying most of the time but Thank you for making this movie! It gives me hope that I am not alone in this space.

Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam

TL,DR: I know this will be very controversial, but I feel compelled to share the truth, since I think most of those who have seen this movie missed the point, to share the context behind why Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam was created, and why certain creative decisions were made. It took years for the writers to decide to share their side of the story.

In reality, the writers' partners passed away from a severe, debilitating diseases, not HIV. However, they made the deliberate creative choice to change the illness to HIV in the film to heighten the central dilemma and draw attention to the harsh institutional and societal realities surrounding the diagnosis during that period. At the time, the legal and social framework in the Philippines was governed by the Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998 (RA 8504). Awareness, protection, and rights were far more limited than they are today. While Republic Act No. 11166 later modernized HIV policy in 2018, the heavy stigma surrounding the condition back then created immense structural barriers for those affected and their loved ones.

Regardless of the underlying diagnosis, the core reality depicted in the film remains entirely true to their personal experience: the complete ERASURE of a queer partner in TIMES OF LOSS. When their partner passed away, they experienced profound disenfranchised grief:

>They were barred from being present at the hospital.

>They were denied the opportunity to deliver a eulogy and was asked to stay hidden during the interment.

>They were not given any of their partner's ashes following cremation.

>The family cut off all contact with them immediately after the services.

>They were treated as a complete stranger and left to grieve in total isolation.

Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam was made to reclaim that stolen space—to recreate those painful moments with their rightful place by their partner's side finally acknowledged. Beyond its narrative changes, the film serves as a reminder that no surviving partner should ever be stripped of their grief, dignity, or right to mourn.
