The Hardest Part Is Knowing When to Stop

Last time, I almost blew ₱1M and almost lost all the savings I worked so hard to build for the past two years. I told myself, “Last ₱70K cash-in. Pag natalo pa, hihinto na talaga ako.”

Siguro pinagbigyan lang ako ng Diyos, ng tadhana, or whatever it is, but I was able to get back all my loss and finished ahead. I stopped when I got to ₱1.2M, so technically, nanalo pa ako ng ₱100K.

Pero grabe, sobrang hirap. It was nerve-wracking. Sobrang nakaka-nerbyos yung constant ups and downs, yung panalo-bawi ng taya, and yung feeling na isang wrong move lang, pwedeng mawala lahat.

The next day, may ₱190K cashback ako. Nilaro ko rin yun, and I got it up to ₱600K. So in total, around ₱700K yung winnings ko.

Pero sa totoo lang, ayoko na. Gusto ko na talagang huminto. Kaso I still keep finding myself playing. Nananalo pa rin ako, ₱40K, ₱50K in a day, but honestly, aware naman ako na hindi na ito maganda. I'm getting hooked. And I know one day, if I still keep playing, maipapatalo ko na naman lahat, & baka at that time, hindi ko na mabawi. I know, ang bobo ko at ang tigas din talaga ng ulo ko. 😔

I really want to stop while I'm still ahead.

Meron ba dito na naka-walk away successfully while you're still up ahead? Any tips? 🥹

It finally happened.

I posted here last time na I was up a bag, and I was even asking for advice on how to run away with it na and finally stop.

Guess who's stupid enough to still continue gambling?

Me.

I was down ₱1.1M.

Never in my wildest imagination did I think I would let myself throw away that much money. I almost lost all of the savings I worked so hard to build for the past 2 years.

And please, don't take what I'm about to say as a reason to gamble or chase your losses. I recovered SOME of what I lost. But even after that, hindi pa rin ako makausad na mabawi ko lahat. I kept getting stuck at a certain amount, and every time I tried betting bigger para lampasan yung amount na yun, matatalo ako. Then manggigigil ako, so tataya ako ulit ng doble para sana mabawi yung natalo the previous round. Pero sunod2 na matatalo. Lose streak pala, so each time, doble yung laki na mawawala sakin.

Before I knew it, halos balik zero na naman.

Maiiyak na lang ako sa katangahan ko. Then magca-cash in na naman ako because I couldn't accept the loss, and I'd have to grind my way back up again.

Over and over and over.

Sobrang hirap nung emotional up and down. I was literally shaking because I was terrified of how much money I was watching disappear every time.

For almost 2 days straight, halos hindi ako natulog at nakakain. Naghahabol lang ako ng talo. It was devastating and nerve-wracking.

Grabe.

I always thought I was smart enough and emotionally grounded enough na hinding-hindi ko hahayaang matalo ako nang sobrang laki. Akala ko may enough self-control ako to know when to walk away.

All I could think about was getting the money back.

Then my daughter said something that finally snapped me out of it:

"Mommy, stop ka na niyan. Baka hindi na tayo makabili ng bahay dahil maubos na yung money natin sa kaka-'challenge' mo?"

(She calls my gambling "challenges," like the challenges she sees in games. And we're currently processing na makakuha sana ng bahay & she was so excited for that.)

My poor daughter.

She's only 8 years old. She's too young to have seen me like that. Too young to even know that her mom is struggling with gambling.

That broke me.

Sobrang nakakaiyak.

I stopped. But now I'm scared of what's yet to come.

Alam mo namang walang magandang madudulot 'to." I KNOW that. I've known that this entire time.

I still end up back there. One decision becomes another, then another, hanggang bigla na lang akong nasa sitwasyon na never kong inakalang kakahantungan ko.

And now I understand something I used to hear all the time:

Walang panalo sa sugal.

Because even when I was winning, I couldn't walk away. I wanted more.

And when I finally started losing?

I couldn't accept it either.

I chased.

I just really hope this is finally it.

Has anyone here actually won from gambling, walked away, and never looked back?

I've been on a winning streak recently, but instead of feeling happy, I'm honestly scared.

People always say, "Walang panalo sa sugal." I finally understand what they mean. It's not always because you lose money. Sometimes, even when you're winning, you still lose your peace.

When I win, I want to win more. When I lose, I chase. It's such a fucked up cycle.

The worst part is that I'm fully aware of it. Every day I tell myself, "This is the last time." Then somehow I find myself logging in again. I've had so many close calls where I almost blew a huge amount. I end up recovering and even finishing ahead, but deep down I know I can't keep getting away with it forever. One day my luck will run out.

I genuinely want to stop, but I keep getting pulled back in. It's exhausting. I hate that I keep doing something I already know is bad for me.

I'm not here to brag about winning. If anything, I think winning has made it even harder to quit.

So I'm wondering... has anyone here actually walked away while they were still ahead? Did you ever quit for good, or did you keep coming back until something forced you to stop?

I'd really like to hear from people who've been through this. How did you overcome this greed feeling?

I'm so sorry. I feel so guilty.

Even though I know how evil and dangerous gambling can be, I still played today.

I have been winning... but I have no peace.

In fact, I think that's what's scaring me the most. I'm scared because I'm getting greedy. I'm scared because I know I could lose everything... and somehow, that still isn't enough to stop me.

You'd think winning would make me feel happy and satisfied. Instead, I just feel anxious. I'm gonna set a goal like, "Sana manalo ako ng ganitong amount. Ma-hit ko lang to, ica-cash out ko na." And every time I do hit it & cash out, I feel this huge sense of relief, like, "Whew... thank God that's over." But after a while, another reason to play pops into my head.

"Ang sarap naman nung panalo kanina. Just one more pa kaya, baka manalo pa."

"What if madoble? What if manalo pa ko ng ganito?"

"Mayroong cashback, lalaruin ko lang at dodoblehin." (Hanggang sa maubos yung cashback, & then I'll cash in my own money kasi di ko matanggap na naubos at nasasayangan ako)

"May butal yung savings ko, laruin ko 'tong butal at gawin ko lang ganitong amount, para sarado."

The reasons keep changing, and every single one sounds reasonable in the moment.

The scary part is... I'm fully aware of what's happening.

I know one bad session could wipe out everything I've gained.

I know gambling doesn't care if I've been lucky recently.

I know I could get completely screwed the next time I open the app.

And yet... I still want to do it. Alam ko, but I still keep finding my stupid self playing.

That's the part I can't wrap my head around.

I've also noticed my mindset about money changing, and I hate it.

Before, if I spent money on something or treated my family, that was it. I know money is meant to be used. Now, my brain sometimes whispers, "Maglalaro ako neto mamaya para mabawi ko itong nagastos ko."

That's not who I used to be.

I keep asking myself, "If I already know where this could lead, why am I still doing it? Anong klaseng demonyo sumasanib sakin at parang hindi ko ma-reason sarili ko?"

I honestly think the hardest time to stop isn't when you're losing.

It's when you're winning.

Because winning makes you think maybe you'll be the exception. Maybe one more time won't hurt. Maybe you can stop after the next one.

I don't want to wait until I learn that lesson the hard way.

Has anyone here actually managed to walk away while they were still ahead?

Not because you lost everything.

Not because you hit rock bottom.

But because you realised where your mind was heading and decided to stop before gambling took away your peace.

I'd really love to hear your story if you did.

I think the hardest time to quit gambling is when you're winning.

I think I'm pretty self-aware, and because of that, I can admit that I feel like I'm starting to get addicted to gambling. The signs are there. I get restless, and I can't seem to keep my mind off it.

Right now, I've been winning at _____. (I won't mention it as it might cause triggers to others). It's honestly starting to feel like a side hustle. And that's exactly what scares me. I'm getting greedy. I keep wanting to play more.

But deep down, I know this won't last forever. I may be winning today, but I know I won't keep winning indefinitely. Gambling has ruined so many lives, and I feel like I'm heading down that same path, even if I'm on the winning side at the moment.

I genuinely want to stop before it gets to that point. I'd rather walk away now than wait until I learn the lesson the hard way.

But idk, I cant get my mind off it & I keep finding myself playing :(
