Should I reach out to people??
I’m currently stc! Everyone told me to reach out to people and ask for coffee chats, and I got a lot of tips and tricks on how to approach people. I was actually pretty hopeful until I got here.
Then I realized that the team I was working with was extremely—let’s just say—homogeneous. I also don’t think they have any opportunities on that team right now. So I started reaching out to people across the organization, but honestly, most of the responses I’ve gotten have been very surface-level: “Yeah, just try applying.” Some of the staff I spoke with basically told me to look elsewhere because people here tend to hire people they already know.
I’m honestly extremely discouraged at this point. How should I approach this? Should I be talking to HR/recruiters, or should I focus on reaching out directly to the departments that are hiring? Also, is it actually true that they often already have someone in mind for open positions? That’s what one of my colleagues told me, and I’m trying to figure out how much of that is actually true.
