Looking for fun contained stories/scenarios

Hello there NetOps!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted the release of the first rogue-like multiplayer server for ONB. Ever since then, I've been adding more chips, viruses and bosses to make things more entertaining.

Recently, I've been working on adding actual bosses that unlock as you progress and, well, I'm not very good at. I have fun just creating cut scenes and game-play changes, but when it comes to actual dialogue lines or direction is where I struggle. So I want to reach out to the community, I'm interested in reading your thoughts of fun little contained stories that can maybe explain certain boss battles. Maybe also certain gameplay elements that could change depending on the boss you're trying to unlock, any opinion is welcome. The story could be anything that references stuff in the games, in the manga or the anime. Everything is welcome. Currently, these are sort of the scenarios I have already implemented in-game (feel free to also give some sort of story to these scenarios, any extra flavor text is welcome):

Spoiler alert I guess for anyone that could potentially be interested in playing this:

Alpha:
The player collects the 4 tetra codes scattered around the map. There isn't much story here. As the player collects them, the whole net trembles. All I have for this one is flavor text, not a real story. This one was mostly a proof of concept. Have items spawn all over the net where any player online can collect them and once 4 of them are collected, Alpha spawns in the very last area of the game (where I expect players to at least have built a very decent folder)

Bass:
BugFrags will start spawning on maps. Collecting just one will start the quest. Random encounters will now drop BugFrags. 1 BugFrag for busting rank 9 and 2 for busting rank 10 and S. The point to this quest is basically to collect BugFrags and feed them to BugFrag traders that start spawning all across the maps. When the player feeds it 20, the whole net will tremble and Bass can now spawn in the overworld where the player can challenge him. This one was also a proof of concept seeing if I can give the player BugFrags based (heh) on if the "quest" had been globally started. No story to this one either, Bass basically just awakens and wants to test the player (basically what Capcom did to him post BN3)

And these are the ones I have WIP

Gregar/Gregar BeastOut:
It's the one I'm showcasing here. There is going to be a little story regarding the cult that was present in BN6. Basically, they're trying to revive Gregar or recreate him in a way. The gameplay mechanic here is that based on how many bugfrags they take away from you as a player is what you end up fighting when the quest ends. Gregar Beastout -> Gregar BeastoutSP -> Gregar -> GregarSP. Still trying to figure out good dialogue that can keep player interest for this one (whether it's good or bad, judge for yourselves lol)

Starman:
This one's the one I'm most eager to expand on. I think Starman has an awesome design but wasn't in the main games. From what I can gather he's a little cocky and likes to create problems, so I'm shaping it to become a quest where the player foils his plans a couple of times, resulting in a fight with Starman where he gets stronger every fight, culminating in a final showdown in his strongest form after you annoy him enough by stopping his plans

These are the bosses currently that I could add: Duo, Burnerman, Colonel, Elementman, Starman, Shadowman, Hatman, Quickman and Shademan, Protoman, Roll, Gutsman, Fireman, Jammingman, Cutman, Circusman, Airman, Blastman and Iceman. Feel like one of these could use extra love by expanding on their lore? Give it a shot!

At the end of the day, I'm just trying to make these extra scenarios for fans that maybe wanted to see more explored about certain characters that didn't get a chance. Or hey, maybe some whacky scenarios. Would love to read your stories. Could make for an interesting one to implement in-game. See ya in ONB!

"ONB Mystery Network" - The first rogue-like online Battle Network

Hey there, NetOps! Just wanted to announce that "ONB Mystery Network" (AWESOME name suggestion from the community btw) is now online. This is a server that randomly generates map layouts, virus encounter pools and mystery data drops every time you play.

Explore the maps and collect money, chips and HPMems to get stronger. The deeper you go, the harder the virus encounters become. Try to reach floor 10 (currently the highest level floor) to find actual bosses to fight!

This server features:

  • Over 150 battle chips from the official games from Battle Network 1 to Battle Network 6 all programmed by the community
  • Over 50 different viruses from the different games
  • Reduced grind: Some of us like the grind in the Battle Network games. But in order to make it more accessible and replayable, we give you a full set of chips when you unlock just 1. So you don't have to grind for 4 of the same chip
  • Online multiplayer: Explore with friends or fight against them with everything you've collected. As long as you both have the same ONB version, you can fight one another
  • Getting deleted: If your Navi gets deleted, you lose your chips, money and HPMems collected. However, your Navi drops a golden mystery data in the exact place of deletion. It allows you to go back and re-collect your stuff to recover your current run. Be careful though, if someone else collects it then you can no longer get it back. (bonus points if you know what game I'm referencing with that deleted message 😄 )

ONB is available on PC, Linux and Android. You can download it form the ONB Official Site and the Android version from GitHub
Keep in mind: Because of the nature of ONB (that it lets you create anything... including overpowered chips and Navis), I've created a whitelist of allowed items (Navi, chips and Navi Customizer Blocks) that you can download on GitHub (Starter.Pack.zip). Just download and extract ONB, download the starter pack and paste it on the resources/mods folder. If you download the Android app then no need to do this, the Android app already comes with the starter pack pre-installed.
Just use this as a server link and you're ready to play shadis.tplinkdns.com:7777

As always, you're welcome to join our Discord server but feel free to leave your questions and suggestions here and I'll definitely follow up as I check Reddit regularly

Hope to see you there!

Just in case some of you weren't aware, the ONB Android port now checks online for app updates and allows you to download and install it immediately.

It checks in GitHub and if it finds a newer release than your current version, it prompts you to download and install it

ONB Tournament - Oct 3rd

https://preview.redd.it/8a0a3i0cyprh1.png?width=1450&format=png&auto=webp&s=08625504cb28be46abc3bf83119fb67d7939efba

Hey there NetOps. We're thinking of holding a tournament in ONB to show off the new server ( ONB Mystery Network )

The idea is simple. We all start with the same starter pack and start making our way through the dungeon while we collect HPMems and Battle Chips from shops, virus encounters and blue mystery data. Then after a certain time (potentially 45 minutes) we get together and we battle with whatever we collected. Only the things you collect in the server are allowed, the client will automatically disable your folder if you try to add extra chips you didn't earn in-game.

Only 2.1.7 will properly work, so please use a 2.1.7 client!

Feel free to register here on Reddit, but it is preferred you give me (@ShaDisNX255) a shout out over at our Discord: https://discord.gg/V2Tc7rH9Au to properly communicate in real time about the tournament

The starter pack has basic NetNavis with a regular buster chargeshot + special. If you'd like to use one that's currently not available in the starter pack, feel free to suggest one from Keristero's ModSite and I'll consider adding it to the allowed list

Current power level considered for the server is basically no forms and basic abilities similar to what Megaman has access to either in base form or a cross.

Time is still TBD

Truly randomized maps and encounters

Hello everyone! Thought I'd share my latest project here.

I'm working on a game server that fully randomizes Battle Network styled maps and random encounters every time you play. The idea is that you can explore, fight viruses and collect battle chips/money. Every time you play the maps will re-build themselves and they will all have a different enemy pool. The deeper you explore, the harder virus encounters will become eventually reaching a point where you'll start facing off against end game bosses.

Every map has a chance of spawning green mystery data (money), blue mystery data (battle chips) and pink mystery data (HPMem). There will also a chance to spawn random chip sellers that sell you chips you can't get from virus battles. The deeper you go, the better chips they start selling
All random encounters and battle chips here are all coded by the ONB community who have been working on this for years now and I want to give a huge thank you for all their work they've put in.

This server is still WIP, I want to improve the tiles that get generated and some music and background aspects. Currently it's playable for all those who already have ONB and I'm working on getting it ready for public release because only a few NetNavi are allowed in since I don't want to break this game by allowing Bass or something 😄

Sorry for the bad gameplay I'm still not used to touch controls from the Android port haha

My OC Navi: Aztech.EXE

Just thought I'd show off my OC character a bit. This is Aztech.EXE, a Net Navi heavily inspired by the Aztec culture.

Still trying to come up with special attacks and forms for it, but so far I think I got the basics down.

All spriting work was done by TressaNightmaus

Yes, it's heavily inspired by Falzar Megaman (my favorite design) but I think Tressa did an amazing job giving him an identity of his own.

See ya in ONB!

Virus Pets in ONB - WCity Online

I thought I'd share a bit of my progress when it comes to the virus pets that can join you in battle over at my MMO-Styled server (if you ever wanted to play online with friends, come join us wink wink nudge nudge)

Currently you can train your pets, feed them bugfrags, level/rank them up and have them join you in battle.
Current available pets: Mettaur, Swordy, Ratty, Powie, Fishy, Bunny, Piranha, Spikey and Volgear. They've been slightly modified so that one virus type isn't overly overpowered compared to the rest. Swordy doesn't have free area grab, Bunny's stun only lasts half a second when starting, Volgear is slower to move, etc...

Gotta give out a huge shoutout to caseofthematts for working on some of these overworld assets to have your pets just walk around in the overworld. I think they look great (thanks so much for Spikey :D). Also big thank you to Kirbyatina/Dawn/Konstinople for programming the viruses in ONB so that I could steal re-work them to join you in battle :D

ONB is now available for Windows, Linux, Steamdeck and Android. You can download it from here: https://onb.frameskip.net/
WCity Online server: 64.23.226.84:3000

OpenNetBattle [ONB] is now available for Android!

Video by: caseofthematts with his custom NetNavi: HowlerMan.EXE

Alright, it's finally here! I have created an un-official port of Open Net Battle for Android. This port should be able to do everything the PC game can do with a few tweaks to add customizability on Android. But first, a brief explanation to what is ONB

ONB is a game engine that allows users to create their own content for the community to play. You can create your very own NetNavi, program your very own battle chips, Navi Customizer parts and your very own maps/entire games for others to play. There are also talented people that have ported almost every NetNavi that has appeared in the games! You want to use Serenade.EXE, no problem. Sharkman? He's just a download away. Heck, even Iris.EXE is available to play.

Come join us and start playing today. Everything you need is in the brand new, official ONB website: https://onb.frameskip.net/

The game is available for PC, Steamdeck, Linux distributions and now Android!

We have an MMO style server (WCity Online): `64.23.226.84:3000`
We have a server where you can visit ACTUAL websites, including this subreddit: `64.23.226.84:8766`

And so many more!
I packaged in the Android port with a few custom and official NetNavis and battle chips so you can get a feel for the game. If you like what you play then you can start downloading even more mods for the game (all available from the official website)

Current Android port:
- Supports gestures and on-screen buttons
- On-screen buttons can be re-arranged, re-sized and re-mapped
- Supports gamepads natively (PS4 controller and a Razer Kishi gamepad were both tested and working)
- Currently working on having a built-in mod downloader

How to install?
Just grab the apk from the ONB website

Minimum specs?
Should work on Android 6 and above, though the oldest we've tested is in Android 9. It should also support 32bit and 64bit phones but we haven't had a chance to run it on a 32bit-only phone

Initial controls:

  • Move: Swipe from the left side of the touchscreen
  • Confirm/A button: Just tap once from the right side
  • Cancel/B button: Instead of tapping once from the right side, do a swipe motion towards the left
  • R shoulder: Tap the right corner of the screen
  • L shoulder: Tap the left corner of the screen
  • Start/Pause: Tap the top middle part of the screen
  • Escape: Swipe down 3 times from top middle part of the screen

How to add your own mods?
The game comes pre-packaged with very basic mods. To upload your own, please drop them in sdcard/Android/media/net.frameskip.opennetbattle/OpenNetBattle/resources/mods
you should already find some examples there

ONB supports cross-platform, so you can definitely play with or against players from other platforms. Feel free to report any bug here or in the official Discord: https://discord.gg/V2Tc7rH9Au

As always, hope to see you in the game!

- Keyboard/Gamepad support

Things considered for future updates:

- A switch between gesture and overlay button touch controls

Current Android port progress

Hey there, so in case you guys didn't know I started taking a crack at porting ONB to Android. I was able to get a sneak peak at the v2.1.6 source code early and been working off that, so this source should be pretty up to date

Surprisingly, a lot of it works out the gate.

Just have to fix a few input settings, some issues with a few shaders and test out the actual server/pvp stuff and then I could possibly release

Just be a little more patient with me, I'm not an Android dev 😅

Showing off current available Virus Pets - ONB

Hello all, thought I'd share a video of the current state of my ONB project. I've been working on the virus pet menus and trying to make them feel a bit smoother. The current available pets to join you in battle are: Mettaur, Swordy, Ratty and Powie. Pets have their own stats you can train and they can use their own chips if you buy them (pet chips are a money sink for my server)

Poor Powie got deleted immediately :(

I need to level up the poor guy so I can make it stronger.

Anyway, any suggestion is always welcome! What do you think about the menus or the UI in general?

We'd love to have more beta testers to improve the game and/or my server, we have a Discord server: https://discord.gg/V2Tc7rH9Au

Only available for PC at the moment, thanks for being so patient Android users I know you guys keep asking and we keep answering the same thing. We're working on it, we promise!

Polishing up my Pet Virus system

Though I'd show off the polished version of my virus pet system. Now instead of building menus as BBS boards, I commissioned proper window styles with a bit of inspiration from the NT Warrior / Rockman.EXE anime

Tournaments in ONB - WCity Online

Did you know? WCity has a tournament board where you can sign up and fight with other players. Any slot that doesn't get filled with human players gets filled with other Navi battles!

New playable character: Iris / ONB

Just thought I'd show off this cool new Iris playable Navi mod now available for ONB.

Special thanks to u/CaseOfTheMatts for some of the sprite work and also Mrbut1995 for allowing the ONB team to use their Iris battle sprites

Also thanks to DarkwarePX for making Iris playable, we're getting closer to making all Navis in the Battle Network universe playable!

Feel free to join us at: https://discord.gg/V2Tc7rH9Au

Just pushed a huge update to the server.

- You can now earn battle chips via battles in the adventure areas. They'll be added to your library immediately without having to download the mod yourself and add it to your client. The only small caveat is that you don't get individual chips, you get a whole "pack" of chips. You can sort of view this as a QOL feature tbh. Hunting for chips is pretty fun, hunting for specific codes and then getting more than 1 can be a bit tiresome. The only small bug currently is that every time you log on, you'll have to copy-paste your folder if you added any chips earned this way. The ONB team has been notified of this bug and will hopefully get a fix soon before the Android version drops
- Some stores have been overhauled massively, using a new UI that will actually have previews. Not all stores are updated yet and they can still have a bit of a visual bug, but overall they function pretty well
- There are now tournaments on the server! You can play in 2 different tournament modes. Open, where there are no limits to chips, Navis, NCP blocks or WCity tournaments where you'll only be able to use battle chips you've earned inside the server as well as any HPMems you've unlocked. Both tournament modes support up to 8 players and any player slots that don't get filled before the tournament begins will be filled with a random Navi (that scales to the tournament being started obviously). Both tournaments are held automatically at certain times during the day just so you're aware.
