Replaying KCD II on Hardcore Mode and Why It’s Even Better Than Normal Mode

KCD II - Henry and Pebbles Exploring Outside Trosky Castle

Hardcore Mode removes the player map marker, compass and any HUD elements for exploration and combat except for the button prompts, it also removes fast travel too, so you will be spending a lot of time riding Pebbles and exploring the world.

And boy is it so much better... What surprised me is how naturally I learned the environment. Landmarks, roads, and villages are designed so well that navigating through them without the usual compass and map markers feels so rewarding. It’s like real life exploration, relying on memory and observation rather than icons on a screen.

I tried replicating this in The Witcher 3, which I am currently replaying alongside KCD II, by turning off HUD elements as well, but it didn’t work as well as I'd hope. The game’s world is obviously built around compass markers and following map icons, and without them, it’s so easy to get lost and hard to know where i am without using a map.

TW3 - Wilderness Exploration with HUD Elements OFF

However, on big cities such as Novigrad i can manage to explore it without HUD elements, due to the city having memorable enough environmental design, so i think with this particular game i am going to have to do it hybrid, and don't use fast travel as well! I am also playing it on Death March once again to increase my immersion further.

TW3 - Novigrad Exploration with HUD Elements OFF

That’s why KCD II stands out. Hardcore Mode isn’t just a harder difficulty to punish the players for fun, it’s a more immersive, satisfying way to play for immersion / realism geek such as the likes of me.

For me, it transforms the game completely, making the game feel even more alive and immersive than it was before any other RPG I’ve ever played.

Has anyone else tried Hardcore Mode or experimented with turning off HUD elements in other open world games you play?

Kingdom Come: Salvation is the confirmed new name of the upcoming sequel of Big 2025 RPG Hit Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Warhorse Studios has officially confirmed its existence back on May 2026, this is being developed alongside their other project from the Middle Earth: Lord of The Rings IP. It is also rumoured to come out on late 2027 - early 2028 and is set 30 years after the events of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and is set on the historical event called Hussite Wars...

My Take? I can't wait for another KCD adventure, and the fact i may not have to wait very long for it pumps me up with hype even more... I wonder if it will release at the same year as Witcher IV though? Which is also rumoured at late 2027 - early 2028...
