New publication by John Paraskevopoulos — Pearls of Emancipation: The Vision of Shin Buddhism (2026)

Pearls of Emancipation: The Vision of Shin Buddhism by John Paraskevopoulos is now available at the publisher's website (Dharmakāya Books). A free e-text version is also available.

The book description is as follows:

This clear and accessible book, consisting of lectures and essays by the author, sets out the main teachings of Shin Buddhism (Jōdo Shinshū—the Buddhist tradition most widely followed in Japan) in a thorough and easy-to-understand way. It is written for people who are not trained in religion and encourages them to think about life while challenging common ideas about reality. Being brief and self-contained, it provides a glimpse of this often-neglected tradition. If you are new to Shin Buddhism or looking for a more in-depth understanding, this book offers lasting spiritual insight into the tradition of "Other-Power."

Jōdo Shinshū Reading Group: The Larger Sūtra (3): Vows (1–16) and the Stage of the Truly Settled

In our latest reading group session, we continue our study of the Larger Sūtra by examining Dharmākara Bodhisattva's first sixteen vows.

This session explores how these foundational vows frame the Pure Land not merely as a stepping stone, but as the realm of nirvāṇa itself. We read and discuss Shinran's commentary on the 11th vow, focusing on how those who receive true entrusting (shinjin) immediately enter the stage of the truly settled (shōjōju) and are assured of unfailing awakening.
