Army Composition Balance

I want to preface this that am almost certain that this is a skill issue, but wanted to see if anyone has advice on how to build well functioning armies in EL2. I have beaten Adept difficulty, but get demolished as soon as I go up to Hero difficulty.

Given how passive most of the factions are, I have not had a chance to fight much other than the Necrophage, and that has lead me to a question: How do you counter mass Spitter spam? It feels like each hit chunks away at even decently tanky units, and ranged units are usually dead to 3-ish hits against an army of 6-8 Spitters. It feels like there is some sort of silver bullet I am missing, but I just can't put my finger on it.

My primary army composition is 2-3 melee units that take position in bottlenecks, and fill the rest with ranged units. Given how about half the battlefields are centered around tight quarters, it often doesn't feel worth it to try using cavalry that gets bogged down and killed when they engage in melee. Yet, the armies I try to use can't seem to out fight the Necrophages if they have more than 3 Spitters (or their upgraded forms).

I have had success when using the Tahuk's AOE artillery unit, but that is not very feasible in the monsoon 2 timeframe, at least not that I have been able to do.

This leads my to a general question of what people have found as the rock-paper-scissors balance of unit roles, or if that exists in the first place. What units or compositions have been standout for you? Are there strategies or positioning that are not immediately visible? Am I struggling for a reason, or is this a giant skill issue?
