Lucky Find

Today was my birthday and I went straight to the science fiction section to look for any finds, happened to come across this. Currently I’m reading his novel Pushing Ice but I’m gaining an appreciation for the author, wonder how his short stories are.

Finally finished Revelation Space

As the title says, I’ve finally finished the first book in the Revelation Space universe, and man it felt like a chore to get through. So many concepts I still feel like I really don’t fully grasp yet, especially the big reveal at the end of what Hades really is. I admit, I did like it but it was a bit hard to picture some things in my mind as I read, the servitors for example and the ship rats. For some reason, I keep thinking the rats were just that, but with augmentation’s added to them, though correct me if I’m wrong on that.

I’m going to read Pushing Ice next on my shelf.

Recently acquired

I haven’t watched it yet, plan to tomorrow. I kinda wanna see why people didn’t like it, but more so what hell happened so bad that California and Texas had to team up. 🤣

Eva Stratt was a tragic hero

Much as I disagree with Eva’s method of forcing Grace onto the mission, I have to say it was ultimately for the future of humans as a whole. I found her character cold and calculating, but unique in some respects. She had ultimate authority over the entire Earth for the sake of completing the project, but I have no doubt she went on the rest of her life guilt ridden for what she did to Grace.

The message to me was clear: in order to save humanity, she had to do an inhumane thing. Close out her emotional half and sacrifice a single person so Earth could live. That to me, is what made her brilliant, and impossible to fully hate.

I sure as hell hope Earth gave Grace his honors.

Just had to get that out of my system, I still think about this movie in the same way I do about Interstellar.

Phenomenal Space Adventure

Finally got around to getting the DVD, but I will always regret not seeing this in theaters when it released. I just HAAAD to go to the bloody hospital that week. 🤦‍♂️ Yeah…never again.

Wonderful film though. Strangely gives me the same vibes I feel whenever I watch Interstellar. ❤️❤️

What Scientific Terms Are Unique to your Setting?

For those of you with space settings and worlds that are not set on Earth, it wouldn’t make sense to use Earth references or terms throughout your work. Since your book isn’t set in our world the characters obviously wouldn’t know who the people these terms are named after are.

For instance in my novel’s setting, I use the term “Anja Belt”, which in our world is the Kuiper Belt that surrounds our solar system. Kuiper was a guy, and as such there was no guy named Kuiper in the history of my books setting.

What made up terms have you invented that mean the same thing as in our world, but simultaneously are unique to your setting? Are they named after a certain individual who made a great discovery?

Fuel Cell as a Power Source?

I'm working on one aspect of my worldbuilding regarding power generation, but there's something that hadn't crossed my mind until now. Is it possible for a large enough fuel cell to power a small base? And by small, I mean as in less than five habitation units. To my knowledge these cells are used in things like hydrogen cars and covert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, the Apollo program also utilized them in the spacecraft that got each crew to the moon and back.

Is it possible for a larger than average one to given electrical supply to a planetary outpost? Let's say a base of only two habitation units that are connected via a single pressurized corridor? Of course, this base still has solar panels for additional power generation.

Electromagnetic Fields on Spacecraft

Not sure if this has been discussed at some point or another, but I was thinking about this while at work today and plan to add this for my books setting. For those of you familiar with the science fiction drama series For All Mankind on Apple TV+, the show makes mention of new radiation shield technology for the Happy Valley colony. Used to deflect solar radiation and protect the Marsie’s below. In a sense, our planet’s magnetosphere’s does the same thing in protecting us from hard radiation from the sun. And it got me thinking: what if there was a device that could replicate a similar effect, and we placed it onto a spacecraft? A kind of generator that creates a local magnetic field that surrounds a ship to protect its crew from cosmic radiation while in flight. It does sound feasible and would be almost invaluable for long duration missions. The only catch being that such a technology would be used primarily for medium-sized spacecraft, like research vessels.

Not sure if it’s realistic with our current technology but it does sound plausible.

Recently I finished the first novel of what I intend to be a four-part series, and have already planned out the story for the second part. I am interested in getting feedback on the first chapter before proceeding any further. If any are interested, please let me know in the comments and drop a link to your profiles. I will personally DM the first chapter to you via PDF or a Google Doc.

The novel itself is called The Long Night, a space- themed story set in a post-stellar civilization at the near end of time, where humans attempt to prevent an oncoming resource crisis by commissioning their first ever megastructure project.

Though be advised, I intend to select only three of you as I don't wish to have my feed blow up with potentially hundreds of responses.

What I'm looking for:

Worldbuilding

Clarity

Prose

Story telling

Let me know if you are interested, and I will respond accordingly.

EDIT: At the recommendation of a commenter, I've decided to post a link. Though my previous stance of selecting from only three remains, perhaps five.
