Fun facts about the novel I learned from this blog
I found a cool blog a while back belonging to a Chinese svsss enjoyer and they share really interesting things that went over my head!
Understanding these things have changed the context of some parts of the novel for me. I put some links to a couple of these, but I recommend reading the blog because there's a lot of cool stuff I didn't include here.
Also obligatory disclaimer: I'm an ignorant westerner so if any of this is wrong, don't blame me I guess🙃
- "Blackening" (as in Luo Binghe's blackening) is a very unserious anime term
- "White lotus" is a derogatory term usually to describe a female character archetype, so this is not a cute nickname but rather SY implying that LBH is sneaky. This is also the case in the questionnaire extra where he calls him a black lotus. When SY wants to call him a cute nickname, he uses "little white flower" instead.
- Airplane's username is the equivalent of "jacking off" and SY refers to him as "sir jack-off" throughout the novel (7seas translates this as airplane-bro) Included this because I thought "airplane shooting toward the sky" was a vague metaphor but no it's literally as obvious of a reference to masturbation as you can get
- The term Airplane uses when calling MBJ "my king" is more understood as warlord or chieftain in Chinese
- The "endless" in Endless Abyss doesn't refer to the size of it, it refers to the unending torment you experience while there (the word is 无间 (wújian) and it's also the term XL uses in "body in the abyss, heart in paradise" quote)
- The rumor that Shen Jiu was presented to Qiu Jianluo tied up in shibari style is fanon myth
- There is implication of SJ being sexually abused in the Qiu household in the webnovel and in ancient China it wasn't taboo to do this to young male slaves. However, the implication is intentionally vague. (I know this is common knowledge but I added it because I've seen some people question if it was canon or fanon before)
- Marrying a slave to a high class girl would have been preposterous in real life, it would have never happened
- Shen Yuan is MUCH more vulgar in the original webnovel, like 7seas really toned it down Example: "The author pumps out face-slapping revenge porn like fucking for 24 hours straight won't give him limp dick." SHIZUN😱
- The translation doesn't really capture how unintentionally hilarious Liu Qingge is. An example is after SQQ blew himself up and NYY/MF were crying and asking if he was really dead, LQG essentially said "he's dead as fuck" (柳清歌走来，唇边还带着血迹，沉着脸道：“死透了！” Liu Qingge strode over, blood still smeared over his lips. Scowling, he said: "Dead, through and through!"}

- Stallion novel protagonists typically have a sworn brotherhood type relationship, Bingge is an outlier because he doesn't have one. If PIDW were a typical stallion novel, MBJ probably would have filled that role. We learn that Airplane was able to control everyone except for LBH in PIDW, so this tracks with the Bingzu reveal and how he never let anyone get close to him (if you count the extra as canon anyway. I don't but it's fun to think about)
SY refers to Bingge's harem members as "laopo" which translates to girlfriends. Make of that what you will.- SY saying Bingge's harem had 3000 women in it was hyperbole and referecing a Tang emperor who "favored one consort among 3000"
- Transmigration fiction is illegal in China now, unless this is changed, season 2 will never be released
