One free place I’d recommend to freelancers who are struggling to find their first clients
If you're new and you're struggling to find your first few clients, here's one thing I don't see people talk about enough:
Facebook Groups.
And no, I don't mean joining a group and immediately posting:
Hi, I'm a social media manager. DM me if you need help.
That usually doesn't work.
Instead, find Facebook groups where business owners and entrepreneurs are already asking for help.
For example, if you're a social media manager, look for groups where small business owners, coaches, creators, or entrepreneurs hang out.
Then actually pay attention to the questions people are asking.
Someone might post:
- Why aren't my Instagram posts getting reach?
- How can I create content consistently?
- My engagement has dropped. What should I do?
- How do I run Facebook ads?
- I don't know what to post on Instagram.
If you genuinely know the answer, help them.
Give them a useful answer. Share a few practical suggestions. Don't immediately pitch your services.
Sometimes, simply being helpful can start a conversation naturally.
One free Facebook community you can explore is SocietyGal. It's a community for women entrepreneurs and business owners, so it can be useful if your freelance service is related to social media, marketing, branding, or content.
The main idea is:
Don't go into groups looking for people to sell to.
Go into groups looking for problems you can solve.
Your expertise becomes visible naturally.
And when you're starting out and don't have a huge budget for Upwork connects, paid ads, or lead-generation tools, free communities can be worth exploring.
