What’s the point of Algerian independence?

Genuine question.
Every year on July 5th we celebrate Algeria’s independence, but I honestly don’t know how to feel about it.
I have nothing but respect for the people who fought for our independence and the sacrifices they made. This isn’t about them.
What I don’t understand is, what exactly are we celebrating today when so many Algerians are risking their lives every year just to leave the country? People literally die in the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe, sometimes the same countries that once colonized us.
If people are willing to risk everything just for a chance at a better life somewhere else, doesn’t that mean something is seriously wrong? Doesn’t it make you question what independence really means beyond just being politically independent?
I’m not trying to be disrespectful. I’m genuinely curious how other people see it.
