Hating the M5610U, don’t get the hype at all.
So I wore a gbd800 (green, totally unreadable screen) and a dw9052 (blue yellow) for years, but felt like a change and, due to the hype, decided to get the M5610u - I debated the new MIP version but prefer LCD to be honest.
Anyway, after having worn it for a few days I’ve made the following observations;
- The compact dimensions and surprising thinness were a shock. With my DW9052 I’m used to doing Zoolander style turns (mostly Magnum, occasionally Blue Steel) turns through doorways and such to avoid catching it on things. I resent not having to do this anymore. I also resent the way it fits surprisingly well under shirt sleeves and jumpers meaning I often have to physically move my shirt out of the way to read the time like it’s the 17th century or something.
- The styling - the compact dimensions, lovely subtle styling, colour choices and dimensions go with everything and mean I can wear it with almost anything, even in the office. I resent not panicking about watch choice and colours and suitability.
- Time keeping. Having owned various automatics and vintage watches over the years, part of the fun of owning a watch is the constant stress of knowing the time is wrong and having to adjust it constantly while wondering what the point of owning a watch that fails at its core function of telling the time really is. The m5610u appears to be correct all the time. This is boring.
- The backlight - part of the fun of owning a watch is the stress of trying to read the time at night. This watch removes that stress which I resent. EVEN WORSE - it constantly has the habit of switching the backlight on BY ITSELF when I read it at night, removing the fun of trying to find the button for the light. I resent that.
- The battery. Part of the fun of owning a watch is stressing about battery life, then the inevitable fun of trying to change the battery yourself, breaking some really delicate piece of plastic, damaging a gasket, scratching the case back, and then having a nagging feeling that if you even splash water on it, it will now explode as you haven’t put the case back back on properly. From what I understand, this thing could run for a couple of decades before requiring attention. Where’s the fun in that? Ridiculous.
So in summary - great looks, great size, great timekeeping, great battery, long supply of parts (so there’s no point even “breaking it accidentally” cos I can just repair it), bombproof, easy to live with.
I know I can take this watch off and, provided I don’t leave it in full darkness, could come back to it in three or four or five years and it’ll still be running and the time will be perfect. And due to the timeless styling it’ll look as good then as it does now. I hope someone at Casio got fired for that blunder.
Seriously what is the point of this watch? I own several watches and this is all I’ve worn for the last week. Because it’s so easy. I resent that.
