I posted about 25 moving boxes for free after unpacking my apartment. Most were in good shape, just normal cardboard boxes with some tape and labels still on them.

A woman messaged asking if I could reserve all of them until the next evening. Sure.

Then she asked if I could remove every piece of tape because she "didn't want to waste time doing that." Fine, whatever, I wasn't going to do it but she could take them as-is.

Then she asked whether any had writing on them. I said yes, a few had things like "kitchen" or "books" written in marker.

She said she only wanted clean boxes because labeled ones would "look messy during the move."

I told her she could just take the ones she liked.

Her final message was asking if I could deliver the acceptable ones to her because she didn't have a car, and preferably bring at least 20 since "it's not really worth arranging pickup for less."

They're free cardboard boxes.

Someone else collected all 25 an hour later and somehow survived the presence of handwriting.

I've noticed that I sometimes hesitate before giving German friends small random things.

I don't mean birthday-level gifts. More like seeing a tea I know someone likes, a funny little kitchen thing, or bringing them something from a shop because it reminded me of them.

Where I grew up, this was pretty normal and nobody really kept score. But a few times here I've gotten a reaction like "Oh, you really didn't have to!" followed almost immediately by "Now I need to get you something too."

That second part always surprises me a little. I wasn't trying to start a gift exchange, I just saw something for five euros and thought they'd like it.

Is there more of a feeling in Germany that receiving a gift creates an obligation to return the gesture? Or am I reading too much into a polite reaction?

And does it change depending on whether it's food, something homemade, or an actual object?

Ich muss das einfach kurz mit jemandem teilen, weil ich mich gerade so unfassbar freue!

Ich habe dieses Jahr im Frühling zum ersten Mal überhaupt versucht, etwas auf meinem winzigen Balcon anzupflanzen. Ich habe mir einfach ein paar Samen für Kirschtomaten gekauft, sie in kleine Töpfe gesetzt und ehrlich gesagt nicht damit gerechnet, dass daraus wirklich etwas wird. Ich habe sonst absolut keinen grünen Daumen und bei mir geht eigentlich jede Zimmerpflanze ein.

Aber ich habe mich jeden Tag um die kleinen Pflänzchen gekümmert, sie gegossen und ihnen beim Wachsen zugesehen. Es war wie ein kleines tägliches Ritual, das mir unglaubich viel Ruhe gegeben hat.

Und heute Morgen bin ich auf den Balkon gegangen und habe gesehen, dass die ersten drei Tomaten endlich richtig rot und reif geworden sind! Ich habe direkt eine gepflückt und probiert. Sie schmeckt so viel besser als alles, was man im Supermarkt kaufen kann. Es macht mich einfach so stolz zu sehen, dass sich die Mühe der letzten Monate ausgezahlt hat.

Jetzt freue ich mich schon auf die nächste Ernte. Es sind die kleinen Dinge im Leben, die einen manchmal am glücklichsten machen!
