[UPDATE] Folio: custom bookshelves and community spine photos

Hey everyone! I’m the developer of Folio, a reading tracker for iPhone and iPad. I wanted to share an update focused on bookshelves and community spine photos.

A — Answer: What problem does Folio solve?

Folio keeps your books, reading progress, goals, notes, and quotes together in one app.

This update adds a more personal way to display your collection. You can arrange books on custom bookshelves, stack them, show covers or spines, and add decorations.

There are also community spine photos. You can choose a photo shared by another reader, or photograph your own book’s spine, crop it, and share it for others to use.

B — Better: Why try it over alternatives?

If you use Goodreads or StoryGraph, the reason I’d suggest trying Folio is its visual approach and native iPhone/iPad experience.

The bookshelves are a big part of that: you can arrange your collection like a little reading corner, alongside your reading tracker. Widgets and Live Activities also let you keep your current book and reading timer close by.

I’d love feedback from anyone who enjoys organizing their books this way.

C — Cost: Free features and optional purchases

Folio is free to download, with core reading tracking, basic bookshelf creation, and community spine photos available for free.

Optional Folio Plus unlocks extras including cloud sync, advanced stats, widgets, Live Activities, and additional bookshelf styles, backgrounds, and decorations.

US pricing:

  • Monthly: $0.99
  • Annual: $8.99
  • Lifetime: $24.99, one-time purchase

Prices vary by country.

If you give it a try, show me your bookshelf! I’d also like to hear which styles or decorations you’d want next.

A Simple Book Tracker for iPhone

Hey! I’m Miguel.

I started building Folio because I wanted a book tracker that felt a bit quieter. I didn’t want another feed to keep up with, and I didn’t want every reading session turned into XP or a challenge.

I mostly wanted to see my books, press start, read, and put my phone away.

That’s what Folio became.

A — Answer

Folio keeps your TBR, current reads, finished books, progress, goals, quotes, and stats in one place.

You can search for books, scan an ISBN, or import your existing library from Goodreads or StoryGraph.

The part I care about most is reading sessions. Start the timer, put your phone down, and with Folio Plus it stays available on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. When you’re finished, update your page and Folio keeps track of your time and pace.

You don’t need an account to use the core app. There are also no ads or ad tracking.

B — Better

Goodreads and Fable make sense if you want more community and discovery.

Folio is intentionally on the other end of that. It’s personal, cover-led, and focused on your own reading. It doesn’t put a social feed in the middle or try to keep you scrolling.

C — Cost

Folio is free to download, and the main book tracker is free to use.

Folio Plus is optional. In the US, it costs $0.99/month, $8.99/year, or $24.99 for lifetime access. Plus adds sync, advanced stats, widgets, Live Activities, barcode scanning, unlimited imports, Discover, and additional goals.

If you try it, I’d honestly love to know what feels good, what feels confusing, or what you think is missing.

What to read next?

Just finished The Mad Wife and absolutely loved it. Constantly questioning everyone including the narrator and the constant sense that something was off kept me hooked. I’m trying to decide what to read next, which one would you pick with a similar vibe?

Update: thanks everyone for the recommendations. It seems Yesteryear is what I’m looking for. For what I read it’s a hit or miss, but I’ll give it a try!

I'm building the book tracker I wish Goodreads was

Hey everyone,

A while back I shared Folio here, and the feedback from this subreddit helped shape a lot of what came next.

A - Answer: What problem does Folio solve?

Folio is an iOS/iPadOS book tracker for people who want to read more consistently without turning reading into admin work.

It keeps your library, TBR, current reads, reading sessions, progress, goals, stats, quotes, reviews, and reading calendar in one calm native app. No social feed, no ads, and no ad tracking.

Since I last posted, Folio has improved a lot: faster search, better book results, Discover by genre/region, a cover-based reading calendar, shareable calendar exports, more reliable Goodreads/StoryGraph imports, cleaner book details, quotes, reviews, widgets, Live Activities, and better stability with larger libraries.

B - Better: How is it different from alternatives?

Compared with Goodreads, Folio is more private and focused: no social feed, no reading pressure, no ads, and a much more native iOS experience with widgets, Live Activities, reading timers, and cleaner progress tracking.

Compared with StoryGraph, Folio is less about social/recommendation graphs and more about fast personal tracking: sessions, goals, calendar views, quotes, reviews, export, and a cover-led library that feels built for iPhone and iPad.

Compared with Fable, Folio is not trying to be a book club or community app. It is for keeping your own reading life organized: what you own, what you are reading, what you finished, and whether your habits are actually improving.

C - Cost: Pricing and App Store link

Folio is free to download.

The free version includes the core book tracker features: library shelves, manual book entry, book search, progress tracking, reading sessions, reading goals, basic stats, notes/quotes/reviews, and library export.

Folio Plus is optional and helps support ongoing development and server costs.

US pricing:

  • Monthly: $0.99/month
  • Annual: $8.99/year
  • Lifetime: $24.99 one-time purchase

Folio Plus helps support ongoing development and server costs, and unlocks extras like cloud sync, Goodreads/StoryGraph imports, ISBN barcode scanning, advanced stats/calendar features, widgets, Live Activities, personalized Discover rows, and unlimited goals.

I’m still building this as an indie app and improving it constantly. If you try it, I’d genuinely love feedback on what feels missing, what feels confusing, or what would make you switch from Goodreads, StoryGraph, Fable, or whatever you use now.

I made a free iOS book tracker for people trying to read more consistently

Hey everyone,

Solo dev here. I recently launched Folio, a completely free iOS/iPadOS app for tracking books, reading sessions, goals, and stats.

I built it because my own reading lists were getting split across Goodreads, Notes, and random lists. I wanted something calmer and more native to iOS: no social feed, no pressure, no ads, no subscription.

The goal is simple: keep your library, reading progress, goals, and stats in one place without making reading feel like admin work.

What Folio does:

  • Organize books into Want to Read, Reading, and Read shelves
  • Import your existing library from Goodreads or StoryGraph CSV exports
  • Add books by search, manual entry, or ISBN barcode scanning
  • Track pages, minutes, reading sessions, streaks, and reading days
  • Set goals for books, pages, time, days read, or streaks
  • Plan upcoming reads with target months and gentle pace guidance
  • Rate and review finished books, with private notes
  • See stats for pages, time, books finished, and long-term habits
  • Use widgets and Live Activities to keep your current book/timer nearby
  • Export your library whenever you want a copy of your data

Recently I added Goodreads/StoryGraph import and a reading calendar in the Stats tab, which were two features I really wanted before sharing it more widely.

The app is still early, but it’s completely free.

No ads.
No subscriptions.
No ad tracking.

I’m improving it almost every day, so feedback from this subreddit would genuinely help. If you try it, I’d love to know what feels missing, what feels confusing, or what would make you switch from Goodreads, StoryGraph, Fable or similar.

Roast my screenshots

Hi r/AppStoreOptimization!

I recently launched my first app and was wondering how i'm doing in terms of ASO.

I'm getting a decent conversion rate but low impressions which makes me think there could be marging for improvement in the app store page. I'm already working on the keywords, but do you see anything obviously wrong with the screenshots?

Hi r/AppStoreOptimization!

I recently launched Folio, a book tracking app. I've been getting consistent downloads since the launch with a decent CR (avg 7%), but the impressions are way too low.

Is there anything on the screenshots, title/subtitle or icon that you would improve or think that could be hurting the impressions?

Hey everyone, quick self-promo: I’m building Folio, an iPhone app for keeping track of your reading.

It’s meant to feel more like a warm, quiet reading space than a spreadsheet or social feed. You can track what you’re reading, what you’ve finished, your TBR, reading sessions, goals, streaks, and stats.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6764345729

I’d honestly love your feedback!

My TBR got out of control this year, so I made Folio: an app for keeping track of what I’m reading, what I’ve finished, and what I want to read next.

I wanted something warmer, cleaner, and faster: open it, update a book, maybe log a reading session, then get back to reading.

A few things it does:

  • add books by search, barcode scan, or manually
  • explore author's books
  • start reading sessions to track time and progress
  • reading statistics
  • set different kind of goals (eg. X pages/books/minutes per day/week/month)
  • iCloud sync
  • export your library if you ever want to leave

There are more features and quality of life improvements coming, so stay tuned!

I’m the developer, so this is obviously self-promo, but the app is free right now with no subscription or IAP. Would love to hear what you think if you want to give it a try.
