The title is satire. Why do people think this is an actual guide to kill men?

The title is satire. Why do people think this is an actual guide to kill men?

Why do people think that this book is an actual guide to killing men? I saw a reel where a woman brought this book to read, and the comments were full of people judging her.

I want to clarify that this is a novel where the FMC becomes a vigilante and targets men who have committed crimes and violence against women. As the suspicion and body counts increase, she needs to maintain her public image and try not to get caught.

It's a work of fiction, not a guide on how to kill men in real life

How many books have you read so far?

It's halfway through the year, and I didn't get back into reading until last month. I was wondering how many books have people read in the past half year and past month? I know I shouldn't compare myself to booktok people but I can't help but feel behind when I see people finishing 20 books a month.

Edit:

Seeing everyone's response has been amazing. I was a library assistant at one point in my life and knowing hundreds of people read anything at all is pretty cool. Very grateful for taking the time to respond, I don't feel so alone with my progress anymore.

Trying to identify weird novel about a strange UK town with a grinding noise underground?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to track down a book I was recommended a while ago online and I’m completely stuck. I’ve tried searching but nothing seems to match, so I’m hoping someone might recognise it from the description.

It was adult fiction, but the main character was a teenage boy from memory. The story was set in a strange small town in the UK (or at least a very UK-like setting), and the atmosphere was very unsettling. The townspeople felt odd or “off,” and there was a strong sense that something wasn’t right beneath the surface of the town.

There was a constant humming (maybe grinding?) noise coming from underground, and it felt like it was implied that there was a huge buried machine or industrial system beneath the town or a factory. As the story progressed, people began disappearing, and it seemed connected to whatever was happening underground. From the synopsis I was told, the whole thing had a very weird fiction/uncanny tone rather than a typical YA dystopia.

The cover (as far as I remember) was mainly red and showed a house with a gear or cog underneath it, like there was something mechanical or industrial beneath the surface. I think the title may have included the word “Under,” but I’m not sure.

I was recommended it fairly recently, and think the book may also have been publised in the last few years.

If anyone recognises this, I’d really appreciate the help, it’s been driving me a bit mad trying to find it!

Thanks in advance!!

25/52 Tier List

Here are some short thoughts about everything that I've read so far.

Dungeon Crawler Carl- this book series is spectacular. I love the character development, and unlike some people, I really think that the first one is my favorite of all of them so far. I love them all for different reasons tho.

Doomsday Scenario- honestly, now that I'm thinking about it, that might be my favorite book. Introducing side quests, and donut getting more flesched out is awesome.

The Hobbit- what's not to love? I had to read this for school, but I ended up really liking it and I think it's one of my favorite books of all time.

Snapshot- can't really say anything without spoiling it, but it's only 70 pages, SO GO READ IT. I read it all in one sitting, and it was probably the best hour of reading of this year.

Finally donovan- this book is here just based off pure enjoyment. I really like Finley and Vero, and I think the plots are zany and fun.

The silent patient- this book I read in 24 hours, and I'm so glad I did. I'm off the group that really likes this book, but I do think there is a tad bit of wasted potential.

The bad beginning- I love lemony Snicket. There's not much to say here, but I just think of this book is fun awesome.

Blood over brighthaven- very interesting book, I really enjoyed the magic system and think that it's an easy fantasy book to read you want to get into it

Gate of the Feral gods- DCC. Yay it's awesome HAHA

The long walk- I really enjoyed this book, and it made me want to read more Stephen King. I thought of that. The book could have had a more interesting ending, but hey that's I guess that's what the movie's for.

Nothing like the movies- Yes, I do have eclectic taste in books 🤣 unlike some people, I think this was a really good sequel, and I think Liz finding herself again is really awesome. Love both the main characters.

Knocks em out- Again, not much to say, just a funny good time

Treasure hunters- some might say this is just a stupid book made for kids, but I personally loved the illustrations and I really like the kid kids 😁

Who could it be this hour- Lemony Snicket, but with a weaker plot in my opinion.

DCC Graphic Novel- it was worth my time, but honestly, I don't think it does the book's Justice. Not at all how I picture most of these things, and so I didn't really like it.

Anarchists cookbook- definitely my least favorite DCC because of how confusing it is, but think it has one of my top three moments in the series, and there's a lot more Katia character development.

Turtles all the way down- I expected more from John Green. I enjoy his pros and the way that he writes things, but this book just had a weak plot, and I feel like nothing really happened except learning about the main character's OCD, which there's nothing wrong with but but I felt that the book was quite slow and didn't have much of a plot.

Bad Asians- the trope of everybody's a terrible person is kind of played out, and to be honest this book was hard to get through and I sort of skimmed the middle 🤣

Red rising- yes I no I will get hate about this, and I do acknowledge it as an objectively good book, I just personally did not enjoy the writing style at all and do not think that it is worth the hype at all. Maybe I will have to try to read the whole series, because I've heard they're very good.

The caddy- I read this book alongside my dad, who didn't like it any more than I did. This book is pretty much only good if you love golf (which I do) but I think the plot is extremely weak and boring.

Operation bounce house- yeah, this was one of my least favorite books of the year. I thought the plot was extremely boring, and everything that made dungeon Crawler Carl good, Matt took away.

Julie Chan is dead- this book was stupid on so many levels, but it had a really good first 100 pages of buildup.

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo- I thought it was an all right plot, and maybe I would rate it a bit higher into the tier above. But no, I really just didn't enjoy this one.

Northwoods- it was doing way too much, and I had no idea what I was getting into. Thought it was going to be really fun and insightful but it was actually really really stupid.

What should I read next?

I just finished The Ballard of Song Birds and snakes and The Hunger Games trilogy. I am also doing Dungeon Crawler Carl on audio book. What should it use for palate cleanser before my next series?

I am in search of truly niche and original books. Any recommendations?

I've read so much at this point that I genuinely can't find anything fresh anymore. Everything people recommend I've either already read or it sounds like something I've read. I want something truly niche, unexpected, the kind of book nobody talks about but should. Help me out.

Also, since a few of you asked, I usually dig through Knosit to find niche stuff.

Is this book mold? If so, what should I do?

I looked through my bookshelf and saw this. Is this book called, or is it just a stain? In case it was book mold I put it in the freezer, but I’m still nervous. Is this book mold? If so, is it good to put on my shelf now that it was in the freezer? I’m not sure what to do. I went ahead and reorganized my bookshelf just in case.

Note: the reason I think it could be book mold is because I live in a humid climate and saw a few TikToks about it.

Need help picking a cover

Edit: if you want to know the artists that create these amazing covers, they are tagged on my Instagram @poppyharrows (except 2 people who did not give me socials)

I decided to run a (paid) competition for the cover of my upcoming debut Dark Romantasy book - I aimed it at students or people who are just hiding in the background, sitting on some serious talent and the submissions I got were AMAZING.

But now I need to pick one.😩

I will admit, going into this, I had no idea what makes a good cover, and I was only really fascinated by the art.

Since then, I have read a lot about how the cover needs to signal the genre, the vibe, etc. But I was hoping there were some published authors floating about who would lend their eyes to these 16 covers and tell me what you think would be a good fit, but also what would be a good style/subject matter for the next 5 books to come 😬

(I have not tagged the artist in the post because I only have their Instagram handles and do not have permission to share first names, but if you like a style/design and are also looking for art, comment the number of the post (in red), and I will send you to their Instagram - these people need support!)

Where are the bookworms in Addis hiding?

I am an avid reader looking for fellow story collectors and readers. I have a book club that I love, but we are all at different stages of our reading journeys, and most members are just getting back into the habit.
Right now, I am looking for a group of people who appreciate well-written books. To be honest, I'm looking for something beyond Colleen Hoover or smut (no shade to you if you enjoy that—I do sometimes, too!). I am searching for people who enjoy reading classics and thought-provoking contemporary fiction, and who want to have conversations that make you gasp for air not only because your crying but utterly absorbed in the world, books that make you sit and reflect.

The question is, Where are you?

Just finished Yesteryear. Was NOT expecting that ending.

I just, I have no words. For a debut novel, I was not expecting to be sucked into this story like I was. I want more!

I just created an ebook reader app!!!

Alright, so I'm a data science student and over the past few months I've been building a personal project that somehow turned into a full app lmao.

It's called DailyScroll, and the idea is pretty simple: read books the same way you'd naturally scroll on your phone. I mainly built it because I love reading (especially philosophy), but I kept finding myself spending way more time on my phone than actually picking up a book.

The app is completely free so no ads, no subscriptions, no premium version. It has 400+ public-domain classics, offline reading, importing your own books, notes, chapter navigation, reader customization, and a bunch of other features I've been slowly adding.

Now here's where I need your help.

Google requires new developers to run a closed test before publishing, so I'm looking for people willing to install the app, mess around with it for a bit, and give me brutally honest feedback. Seriously, if something sucks, tell me. If you think something should be added or removed, tell me. That's honestly way more valuable than someone just saying "looks good."

I'll attach some screenshots below, and if you'd like to help test it, leave a comment or send me a DM with your email account and I'll gladly send it over (Google makes me whitelist testers first).

P.S. It's currently 3:45 AM while I'm posting this... so hopefully the lack of sleep was worth it
