Antibiotics + HG

Does anyone have any experience of taking antibiotics while having HG?

I have possible mastitis (very early) and GP has prescribed me a precautionary antibiotic Flucoxacilin which requires 4 doses a day and to be taken on an empty stomach (an hour before and two house after food). Although eating is incredibly difficult for me, a major trigger for my HG is a completely empty stomach so I’m not sure how to manage this. I did explain to the GP I had HG (to which she said oh you’ve got mornings sickness 🙃) but this seems like an antibiotic that is really not ideal to take alongside HG.

Does anyone here have experience of managing an antibiotic alongside HG? Which did you take and how did it sit alongside your symptoms? Did it make things worse either the sickness or the constipation from the meds?

I don’t really know what to do.

Small wins

Sharing a small win but after weeks and weeks and weeks of struggling and fighting to be taken seriously and advocating for different medication and begging to be allowed to take multiple medications at once (the UK seems very medication adverse) I finally started a new protocol this Friday. I’m 14 weeks tomorrow and have been debilitated by HG since week 5.

By today I now seem to be experiencing “normal” levels of pregnancy sickness and finally able to follow the advice that has plagued me and so many of us throughout our HG experience.

I’ve been able to keep down the ginger lozenges everyone keeps banging on to me about (“bUt hAveE yOu tRiEd GiNgEr?) and even tolerate the small sips of water and actually eat frequent small meals - strictly beige food only - that all the helpful GPs and nurses have recommended I try. I might even have kept 1000 calories down today!

Still have huge food aversions, insane smell sensitivity (husband is sleeping in the spare room because I can’t cope with his “smell” and is living on sandwiches because cooking is banned from the house) and can’t imagine actually wanting food…

Also aware this could all change on a dime, as I know how up and down this journey can be, but wanted to take a moment to acknowledge what feels like a win.

[my medicine protocol if helpful: 4 x Xonvea a day, 1 x Omeprazole (as soon as I wake up), 3 x Ondansetron (Zofran) and 45 ml of lactulose to help with 💩(not currently working well)]

I’m currently 12 weeks and really struggling. I’m in the UK which feels (compared to what I’ve seen on other posts) to really lag behind when it comes to care and treatment for HG as I’ve struggled to get taken seriously by GPs and even the hospital at times. I’m currently on Xonvea max dose which allows me to eat and drink just enough to remain out of the danger zone although the nausea is still almost constant and has severe peaks, also extreme fatigue, brain fog, and from time to time headaches and dizziness.

My question is how likely is it that this will actually just disappear over the course of the next few weeks? That’s what I keep being told by various medical staff but I’m not sure if this is for HG or just regular pregnancy sickness as I don’t seem to be getting taken very seriously.

From what I’ve read here it seems like most people seem to have it for their whole pregnancy.

Some additional context: I have an overseas wedding coming up in 3 weeks which I’d love to attend, but can’t even fathom getting on a plane right now and think I should let the bride know sooner rather than later if we need to drop out. She’s not been very understanding of my situation and said I should have given more notice when I had to cancel on the hen do with only a few days notice - I’d hoped I’d be well enough by the end of the first trimester as that’s what I’d been told by my GP - so I want to be as considerate as possible for the wedding.

Furthermore I’m currently off work on sick leave (statutory sick pay in UK) and although I know I’m legally protected here, I’m worried about how much more time I may need off. I currently struggle to have conversations or do more than sleep, watch TV, listen to podcasts - Even reading is too much - so I feel totally incapable of operating even at a very basic level in my role (which is a senior leadership position in financial services).

Keen to understand the chances of improving significantly in the next few weeks.
