About to give up on 078s
Hey everyone,
I'm having trouble with the grind size as well as the grind quality of the 078s.
I've had the grinder for several years, since its launch. At first I tried to use it with the Flair Pro and it needed an unusually low grind size of about 1, and the quality wasn't there either. When I asked around, others used all kind of random values ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 which seems very inconsistent. Flair Pro needs coarse size in general.
People said that it also needed heavy seasoning to work right.
Since my workflow and results weren't great, I switched to mostly pour-over for the next several years. I never felt the quality was really great, but pour-over can be pretty forgiving.
Now I got a proper espresso machine and I'm trying to use the Sculptor as part of a good workflow. However it is almost impossible to calibrate it. I've set the chirp point to about 0.5, and if I grind just above the chirping it still runs too fast. In case it was channeling, I went even more coarse but just runs faster.
I've disassembled, cleaned thorougly and reassembled the machine 3 times trying to find consistency but at the end it's the same story.
Even if I grind at 0.5 with chirping it might run too fast. But sometimes I manage to choke it instead. But I haven't found any consistency in adjusting it. Making it slightly coarser runs fast again, and then grinding at chirping also runs fast.
In contrast, if I use my 1zpresso K-Plus hand-grinder it's pretty easy to find the grind size, of about 3, which also leaves a lot of leeway for adjustments.
Since I already have this grinder which is supposed to be higher-end, it feels like a shame to buy another, because it's not working as it's supposed to. I was wondering if these issues ring any bells, and if anyone has any tips that could lead me in finding a solution and keeping the 078s as part of the workflow.
