Is being “too wet” during sex actually a problem, or did my ex just get in my head?

I (30F) was seeing a guy for about two months, and we were hooking up. I was attracted to him, and whenever we had sex, I would get pretty wet. However, he told me that it was too much for him and that he couldn’t feel enough friction to enjoy sex.
Honestly, that comment bothered me more than I expected. I’m not someone who sleeps around, but I’ve had a fair amount of sexual partners, and not once has anyone complained about this. If anything, previous partners have made positive comments about it, so this was the first time I’d ever been made to feel like it was a bad thing.
Things ended between us about a month ago, and I recently hooked up with someone new. In the middle of sex, I actually caught myself apologizing for being too wet. The new guy looked at me like I was crazy and said, “Why would you apologize? I love that.”
That interaction made me realize how much the first guy’s comment had gotten into my head. I never used to think twice about this, but now I’m suddenly self-conscious about something that has always been completely natural for me.
So I’m genuinely curious: Is being really wet during sex actually a problem for some guys because of the lack of friction, or was this just a personal preference thing? Have other women experienced this? I know everyone has different preferences, but I’m wondering if this is more common than I thought.
I don’t want to keep feeling insecure about something that shouldn’t be an issue, but his comment has definitely stuck with me.
