The new play “The Mad King” shares with us that Dunk was, in fact, never knighted by Ser Arlen, and Egg knew it all along. It says that Egg knew because 1) There is supposed to be a period of time dedicated to prayer and fasting after being knighted, and the timeline didn’t add up if Arlen just died. Dunk should have been fasting and praying when they first met. 2) A hedge knight couldn’t lawfully knight another person without a knight of high birth and renown to witness, or some kind of letter of authenticity from a reliable witness. Now, nothing else from that play makes sense to me, but this is something I always assumed anyways. The fact that someone that wasn’t actually a knight was more honorable than most other knights is what makes Dunk my favorite. Do you guys think this could be something GRRM told the playwrights before they made the play?
