Best surfskate for training Rapid Surfing / Stationary River Waves (UNIT Wave)?

Hey guys,

I need some expert advice on choosing the perfect surfskate. My situation is a bit specific: I am not training for ocean surfing, but exclusively for Rapid Surfing / Stationary River Waves (specifically the UNIT Parktech Wave in Langenfeld, Germany).

About me:

  • Height: 174 cm (5'8.5")
  • Weight: 70 kg (154 lbs)
  • Surf Level: Beginners on rapid waves (can stay on the board for about 10 seconds right now, still working on holding the balance in the heavy flow).
  • Skate Background: I have a solid skateboarding foundation. I feel comfortable on normal skateboards and cruisers, so balance/pushing is not an issue like (4/10).

My Goal:
I want an land training tool that specifically translates to the compact, high velocity environment of a stationary wave. I need sharp rail to rail transitions, a deep center of gravity, and a setup that forces me to drive from my hips/shoulders instead of just ankle wiggling.

From my research, I narrowed it down to YOW, specifically between two choices, but I am torn:

  1. YOW Huntington 30" (17" wheelbase, Meraki S5): I read that the short wheelbase is amazing for the super tight turns and snappy rail action needed on compact river waves where you dont have space for wide ocean carves.
  2. YOW Pipe 32" (18.5" wheelbase, Meraki S5): The absolute bestseller. Will the 18.5" wheelbase give me better stability against the heavy rush of the UNIT wave while still being snappy enough?

My Questions:

  • Given my height (174cm) and weight (70kg), should I go with the ultra snappy 17" WB (Huntington) or the slightly more stable 18.5" WB (Pipe) for rapid surfing?
  • Is there any other brand (like SmoothStar or Curfboard) that actually performs better on a stationary river wave than a YOW Meraki?
  • Budget is tight (buying used), so if I get a cheap YOW setup, does it make sense to swap the Meraki trucks onto a wide 10" old school pool deck that I like

Appreciate all your inputs!
