Surf goofy but can only surfskate regular — should I switch stances?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice.

I surf goofy naturally and it feels comfortable in the water. The problem is that I recently bought a surfskate to improve between surf trips (I live in Quebec, so I don’t get to surf often), and I can barely balance riding goofy on it. For some reason, skating regular feels way more natural and stable.

I was hoping the surfskate would help improve my surfing, but now I’m wondering if I’m practicing the “wrong” stance.

Has anyone else dealt with this?
Would it make more sense to:

keep surfing goofy and force myself to learn surfskating goofy too, or

switch my surfing stance to regular since that’s what feels natural on a board with wheels?

Beginner Technique

Hey surfskating fans

Started surfskating about a month ago, and while I feel like I'm able to generate some decent power and can pump and carve quite nicely I'm not sure my upper body movement is optimal.

Can anyone please critique my form?

Also, based on this short video (going super chilled and slowly) do you think I'm ready for a pump track or a bowl?

I bailed hard on my butt on a quarter pipe a couple of weeks back trying to transition; not sure ramps are for me after that but the flow is just so addictive I want to feel it on something other than flat ground.

The issue is I'm an old dawg with an old lower back issue, so want to minimize the risk of falling on my butt again (though am cool with not looking steezy and wearing protective gear).

Board is a Yow Medina Bengal 33" in case anyone is interested.

Thinking of getting a 40" since my wife is now prone to stealing my board too 😀

Good deal?

Hi guys, so I’m trying to get into surf skate with a good amount of surfing experience and i was wondering

  1. Are these Carver Channel Islands Flyer 30.75" - C7 suitable? I’m 182cm and 70 kg, I’m really leaning towards surf training but weekly cruises and meets with friends.

  2. I’ve noticed a bit of rust on the tip of the screw on the wheel and was wondering if it affects performance? They are asking 160 usd

Bruce Lee surf skate setup

Broke out my Waterborne surf and rail adapters to give my old Arbor longboard some life. It was definitely revived but I wanted something that could give me some snappier turns. I’ve been wanting this Powell Peralta Bruce Lee deck for a while and I finally had an excuse to grab it. Put the Gullwing Charger trucks from my Arbor longboard on it with some Orangatang Fat Frees and it’s riding great! Can’t wait to learn and rip it up with this! 🙏🏽

Bushing durometer for a surfskate?

For reference, so far my main use for my surfskate is cruising and commuting. I have my truck tightened just enough so I can push comfortably when needed (as if it were a regular cruiser board) but that still allows me to pump comfortably and generate speed.

I'm 3 months into, I haven't learned how to make tight turns yet, but looking forward to it.

Would softer bushings make turning easier? How would that affect my stability when pushing, as well as the ease of pumping?

Surf skate Vs normal skate boarding

I have attempted normal skate boarding multiple times and tbh I am shit at it I find it hard to direct the board, generate enough speed to not have to push every few metres. I have more trouble balancing on the board.

I jumped on a surf skate and I felt it is soooo much easier to direct the board obviously but also just overall, balance, steering ect.

Has anyone found this? I haven’t attempted hills yet but I could never do this on a normal skateboard either.

Would a Carver Black Tip 33" Surf Skate work for me - 85kg 193cm tall. I want something that's really maneuverable good for turns, bowl riding etc. but is it too short for me?

What deck for waterborne surf+rail?

I’m thinking of getting a new deck to replace my current PacificOcean cruiser deck.

I’m currently cruising/pumping/carving casually so not looking into anything wild or expensive. I don’t really have any experience with surfskating, but might be interested in getting into it at some point.
I’m quite tight on budget so I’m not really looking for new trucks as I’ve got the waterborne kit and can run it with ~14” WB although it feels a bit short. I have multiple trucks (all TKPs tho) and wheels so I can also mix and match them if that is a thing.
I’d also like the deck to have at least some kick tail ☝️

I’ve shoe size 44EU/10,5US, am 180cm and 65kg. It’s also worth to mention that I reside in EU which limits my options a bit. Decks mentioned are more or less accessible to me, but other recommendations are welcome nonetheless 🙏

First Surfskate board

I’m looking to get my first surfskate board, I don’t really know what I should look for and what fits me. I have started surfing last summer and I wanted a way to practice my surfing skills. I have some experience surfskating but not enough to determine what I like and don’t like in certain boards and what I should get. Any info and recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Edit: I looked into some boards myself and I really like the idea of the Swelltech ones but I read they’re difficult to learn, I don’t really mind if it has a learning curve, but is it to difficult to start out on?

Which should I pick?

So I’ve been surfing for a good amount of time now and wanted to get into surf skate recently. Had a bit of experience with skating but not much. Looking around on fb marketplace I can ether get the Carver Dragon 34 " Kai Lenny complete cx for 180usd or the swell tech premiere black out for 140 usd. Both in great condition. Which one do you guys think is the better pick? Thanks guys🙏

Bought a 2nd hand board - real or fake carver trucks?!?

I bought a used Loaded Omakase. The seller was selling it on behalf of a friend and admitted he didn't know much about it himself. It was hard to tell from the photos which trucks were installed, but when I asked, he said they must be Paris trucks. When it arrived today, I saw that they're Carver trucks—I assume CX. Which isn't a big deal, since I just wanted to see how a surfskate rides.

However, what struck me when I did a quick search online for Carver CX is that both trucks look identical, and there’s no engraving indicating which model it is or which is the front and which is the rear truck.

Is this an original Carver or just a Chinese knockoff?

UPDATE: these are CARVER CV trucks designed specifically for carving, freeriding, and downhill. (Thanks Important-Aide-8374 for the helpful info!)

Locking Screw Yow?

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a used YOW surfskate and I’m still pretty new to these systems, so I’m trying to figure a few things out.

From what I understand, it should be a YOW Meraki S5 system (not 100% sure though). I attached a photo of the front truck.

I recently heard that some surfskates have a kind of locking screw/pin to make the front truck more stable or even rideable like a normal cruiser. I noticed a small hole on the top left of the plate (next to the engraved “S”) and was wondering if that might be for something like that?

If that is the case, can you just buy that part separately (e.g. from the YOW shop), and is there anything specific I need to look out for?

Would be great to understand if this setup can be used in a more “locked”/cruiser-like way.

Thanks in advance!

3 Surfskate Stance Mistakes (and how to fix them)

Since Life got in the way—It took me 5 years now to finally get back to YouTube and making Surfskate Tutorials. But I'm finally back and having tons of fun making these videos 🤙🏼

Please roast me and let me know what I might've missed or what could be improved.

In this video I'm going to share three very common mistakes when it comes to stance on the surfskate. They might feel completely natural on the board — but won't translate into good skill progression and unfortunately are a killer in the ocean on your surfboard as well (if you care about this at all).

I'll show you what they are, how to spot them in yourself, and how to fix them.

It's surfskating

I'd love to see some YouTube videos or other online content where people treat it as surfskating, rather than assuming it's people's way of using concrete to train to surf.

That's it.
