I remember the "be kind, rewind" stickers on VHS tapes, and how some stores would charge you a fee if you didn't rewind the tape, but how would they know that specific tape was the one that you rented?

If multiple people rented the same movie and returned the tapes on the same day using the after hours drop off, the next morning how would the employee know that it was your copy specifically that wasn't rewound?

Did each tape have it's own serial number or some kind of number to identify that it was rented out to you?

I was thinking about this for some reason and was curious.
