Breakfast for 3 with a view

These guys (Ravens) showed up a couple weeks ago and today is the closest they’ve let me come, within 5 ft. As long as I was putting snacks out anyway!

They are eating me out of house and peanut. They eat so much more than a regular crow. A crow will take 2 peanuts and fly off to eat their treat. The raven just goes down the line mowing everything down. I definitely need a Costco trip.

Suspicious character

This Raven has been visiting me a couple weeks now. All I know is one day after a lot of squawks for my attention I went outside, sat on the lawn wall, and crow after crow assembled.

But one was not like the others.
I’ve heard it going caw caw, but it’s the size of a cat. HMmMMMMMM

He’s trying very hard to detect me, but I’m iSneaky

Confused. Ninja bandits raiding squirrel food, who are raiding crow food. Seems unfair. What’s next?

I started out with crow frens. Then it was crow and squirrel, one even eats out of my hand.

Now I got bandits at 12 o'clock. Can anyone give advices?

Streamlining and improving quality of employee submitted tickets

What magic bullets/tweaks have you successfully implemented to improve the quality of incoming tickets?

We have users who will submit low effort tickets that are either un-actionable due to lack of details/critical info, have misinformation, or are the completely wrong form?

We have specific forms for specific common issues that are clearly labeled.

  • The forms prompt for the minimum necessary info for the particular issue; hostname; ilo hostname/ip/pw, etc.
  • When using the correct form there is automation scripting that fixes the most commonly seen issues automatically so an employee doesn't have to wait for a human to help.
  • In general they are clearly labeled. I am working on cleaning up those that are too verbose, or use confusing phrasing.

Yet employees will consistently:

  1. Use the general form. Zero automation and just a big ol fill in the blank, which the user then often leaves out important info. It also doesn't classify the problem correctly so it makes it harder to determine trends. Lots of manual 'tedium'.
  2. Leave info out. There are options to force certain fields to be required, but keep in mind once you do this too many times, it becomes a plain in the ass to the employee, so they'll take the general form route because they "just want to submit a ticket".
  3. Choose the wrong options when they do choose the correct form. IE the default option is "Fix the ACME Widget (Automated), and they will change it to Not Automated, when the automation WOULD have solved their issue. They then have to wait for a human to fix and resubmit their form as automated.

I am working on:

  • Educating employees. After the solution is provided, they get a 'Hey next time you have this issue, use this form - it's automated (URL)'. Asking them to update their teams' documentation. Unfortunately it's whack a mole. Even if one person has the lightbulb go on, they have 20 teammates who never hear or change behavior. And new onboards are often following years old outdated team documentation. o_O
  • Rephrasing to reduce verbosity and clarify ticket forms. People are busy, and too much verbiage leads to low quality intake in my experience.
  • Identifying repeat situations, be it new tickets we 'keep getting', old tickets with repeat submission issues, making suggestions for existing and new automation to the Engineers if I need a little help. And in some cases updating broken code logic or implementing new automation myself.

I know none of this is a magic bullet. Things are improving over time I think. Just looking to see the types of things you all have implemented that have been successful in that you have seen ticket quality improve, less 'general/other' ticket submissions, etc. Thanks.

Made this for my buddy using Canva, took me like 7-8 hrs. Not a graphics major.

Crowd interactive, will be a fun time. There were a few hundred peeps at the show of the artist who played on Thurs.

There is a new artist every Thurs and Sat all summer long. Check Redondo Beach pier socials.

Questions? Fire away, mateys

Ps. I am not a band member or a paid promoter. Just a buddy of his sharing a good time.

Surfs up, m’Ravenlord

This Raven bro doesn’t have a name yet, taking suggestions!

He and his mate live at the beach and live amongst hordes of seagulls who are all to willing to steal food they cannot figure out how to open.

Seagulls are larger, louder, and more aggressive (bigger bullies) than crows and Ravens in my area. Corvids continually have to bow to them.

So giving treats when they are around requires some tactics to be effective. I leveraged corvid intelligence and some training/trust building and it seems to have worked.

I always do a double whistle with corvids when giving treats. Eventually they recognize the sound and can hear it from farther away and will come like good sky puppies. If they are full or hiding they may hear my whistle and ‘call back’ to me, but not come, just so I know they are there, like when they call to each other down the block. Does that make me one of them? o_O

In this case all my other feeding tactics failed. Even the classic throw one peanut one direction and throw another directly to the intended failed. Seagulls just too darn big loud fast aggressive. Corvids are cautious by nature (even with a small underhanded toss you can see bro raise wings to fly away if needed).

So I tried something different. I moved slowly away him giving a whistle. He hopped away from the mob and then I was able to give him treats. Check out the sand. You can see his tracks and how far I had to get him away from the mob lol. He also doesn’t stop to eat it and just put it in his throat pouch. Putting peanut on ground will get it stolen. Smart.

I really love ravens. They are so much larger than crows (love crows too). Almost cat sized. And I love their cute little gronks!

It makes me really happy when I walk around a corvids territory, they recognize, and get excited by my presence. Like little kids and a long lost uncle. I wish more people took the time to get to know these little guys. A friendship with them is extremely rewarding. Even if you do sometimes look like the crazy crow guy.

Help! Outdoor mini pond suggestions for 2nd floor apartment?

Update: Thanks for all the feedback I'll just do something indoors. If this many people agree outside is no go, neighbors and other people might feel same way. Best to err on side of caution.

---

Hi all, pond enthusiast here! Haven't had one for years, but I would REALLY like one again.

I'm currently living 2nd floor of an apartment. There's a small shared walkway. I have no "personal" patio or balcony space whatsoever.

I could use some sort of solar pump to power a waterfall/filter, and include some small fish that could gobbble up any insects or mosquito/larve types who try to make a home.

Shape wise, length and height aren't an issue - just width as it would eat into the public walkable area, might be kicked/present tripping hazard, or if someone is moving furniture it might impede them. Water volume and tippiness are a concern (2nd floor). Flower pot sized, half moon, mini water barrel (not full sized) or rectangular/trough shaped forms would fit the area.

A ceramic or small 'water barrel' type thing might be best, material-wise (no plastic). Something that would look attractive but not invite theft/vandal.

The basin would need to be deep enough that a crow, cat, raccoon, squirrel, or raven on the ledge couldn't 'go fishing' and harass them too much. IE: Plenty of hides.

I could have some small water plants which would do okay with direct sun in the morning until around 11-11:30am and then be in the shade the remainder of the day.

There is a black metal railing if I wanted to add some railing planters.

I live in southern california, for temperatures. Including a photo of outside my door and the walkway.

I could also consider indoors, but I'm in a very small studio apt, so space is a premium. It's honestly relaxing to hear water moving outside my window or come home to a small amount of serenity when I return from work.

Anyway, my questions:

  1. Can you all suggest any really cool outdoor pond shapes or basins that material-wise, would make sense?
  2. Are there suggestions for flora and fauna that would do well?
  3. Are there any recommendations for solar pump/waterfalls that won't end up being messed with, broken, or stolen, by randoms? My neighbors themselves are very respectful and we have good relationships so it wouldn't be them.
  4. Is there a particular phrase or term I could use to search for what I've described? Most of the posts I've seen are from homeowners or people with patios and porches and personal space and may not have as many 'invading the public space' concerns as I have, so I don't often see things to jog the imagination.
  5. Anything else I haven't considered?

Thank you soooooo much for any help or thoughts. Love all the mini ponds I see posted here.

Free music concert Sat Jul 25 6pm - Redondo Beach Pier

Hey all, free concert this Saturday July 25, 6pm, at Redondo Beach Pier.

Featuring pirate-themed Chad and the Ship of Fools. They do original music with a rock/punk vibe, but I haven't seen the play list, so anything could happen.

They'll toss out black beach ball "cannonballs", Invite folks to "walk the plank", and anyone who dresses like a pirate gets on stage.

The live music will be on the horseshoe at the end of the pier. Bring chairs, coolers, pirate gear!

Chad is also in the 90s comic rock band Green Jello (Now Green Jelly, because yes, of course, Jell-O sued them). If you're not sure who that is, ask your 80s-90s kid mom/dad.

It's going to be a fun time!

ps. I'm not in the band or a paid promoter, just a friend of them. If this is disallowed I'll take it down. Thanks.

Michael Jackson impersonator?

Friends and I are doing an impromptu Michael Jackson karaoke night.

We’re tossing around ideas and thought it might be fun to have an impersonator hang out a little while, maybe bust some dance moves, or hee-hoo or shamone sound effects as people do songs?

I’ve no experience in this but anyone know someone who does something like this and the type of rates?

We have very little expectation other than someone coming to hang out, have a good time. No DJing or show required.

Thanks

Territory fight - worried

In the tree is my very big personality brave crow who will fly to me, and either her mate or baby I can’t tell.

But the crows that live across the street are having a beef with her and hit one of them pretty hard yesterday knocking one out of the tree.

Been feeding the street a while, there’s no shortage of treats ever. They were ignoring refilled treats at the usual spot to have a beef.

The one in the tree will call to me and just hang out with me. And I worry leaving her out there calling for me is getting her in trouble with others.

I have to remind myself she seems to have a large roaming area. I’ve seen her in the lawn below this tree looking for juicy bits for a year and change, with her mate usually nearby.

I know it’s nature but my heart still goes out to them. She’s like a sky puppy.
