Finally Happened to Me
I thought it couldn't happen to me. We had full confidence in the long-range ability of our 2012 LR4 Disco, it only had 260,000ish km. We were taking it on a 14-hour round trip to the 24 Hours of Spa last week for camping and racing.
About an hour into our trip on the autobahn, there was a pop and the engine turned off. I coasted to a pull off area and there was oil pouring out from under the car. Lots of oil.
The crankshaft failed and cracked the engine block. Finally got it to a shop, and they quoted €15,000 for a replacement engine and labor. It was an emotional weekend losing the Disco.
On the bright side, ADAC sent this cool tow truck to come get us! It made my inner kid happy.
We're still trying to figure out options since I don't have a shop here where I can work on it.
Edit: just heard from the shop again. Apparently that estimate didn't include turbo, filters, etc and we're actually looking at closer to €28,000.
