LR3 V6?

So, pretty much ever since they came out I've had an odd fascination with the LR3 V6. It's the same motor as an Explorer; how bad can it be? Why would someone buy a complicated BMW V8 when you can have a simple, tough(?) Ford V6? Plus I've always liked that motor when I've driven it in various Explorers/Rangers/Aerostars/etc.

So feel free to shatter the illusion (or not). What's the V6 really like to live with/keep alive? Is the V8 indeed better?

Discovery 4 suspension issues

Hi guys wondering if anyone is able to help diagnose the most likely issue. For the past month my disco 4 has had the warring ( only normal hight available)

Tonight after finishing work and driving home from a customers the car decided to sink super low and then a big red warning came up saying max speed 30mph suspension issue.

Im thinking it could be just the compressor pump. When it first had the issue (on occasion) it would still raise. Then juddering would come from
The back of the car (sounded like it was in the boot) and then the warning of normal night would come up

Any ideas on what it could be and what it’s gonna set me back £

Thanks guys

Cross over pipes (LR4) advice

Hi! I'm new to the community, I wanted to introduce Rocky. This beautiful beast is an LR4 2016, bought at 103 000km. I've owned it for 2 years and added 50 000km more.

Despite their reliability reputation, this car has been solid. Performed oil changes every 5000-6000km. Now it's finally the time to do the cross over coolant pipes, I've been having small coolant leaks and I'm ready to send it to the shop. I prefer to order parts myself, and I'm doubtful about this one. OEM plastic ones are crap, 3rd party aluminum seems better but there are some very cheap and crappy as well.

Any suggestion? Thanks a lot.

How do I fix my discovery’s Tongue weight balance when towing?

Prepping for a trip with my Discovery 2, the vehicle is in great condition and the engine has had a lot of maintenance done in the past 12months. Trailer is 1,300lbs with about 1,300lbs inside. Even for this old girl, the weight should be easily within its range. We’ve pulled it around at weight for 100 miles around town in preparation, and everything is running smoothly.

Where I’m struggling is my tongue weight and the height difference between the discovery’s hitch and the trailer. When loaded, the trailer is heavily compressing the rear suspension. When I lower the hitch height using my variable height hitch, it improves slightly, but I can’t go so low without the hitch hitting the pavement on small bumps and the chains dragging.

Will weight redistribution in the trailer fix this problem? Is this a sign my tongue weight is too strong? Even if it improves but is still sagging, can I safely do my trip with the suspension looking like this? Any input appreciated!

Thinking of moving from a 718 GTS 4.0 to a 992.1 Base/T/S. Will I miss the visceral feel?

Hey everyone,

I’ve had my 2024 718 GTS 4.0 for coming up on about six months or so now (currently in the high teens, approaching 20k miles). It has an unlimited mile CPO warranty until 2030, and whoever specced it originally chose options that make it easier to move if needed.

Honestly, the car is awesome. The high-revving N/A powertrain, the engine sound, and the transmission are all incredible. I also genuinely love the more analog interior, it gives me the tactile feel I want while still supporting CarPlay. (I came from an RS5 and an RS3 before this, and realized giant modern screens everywhere just aren't a priority for me - even thought I don’t mind them)

But… like many of us, owning a 911 has always been the ultimate dream.

I strongly prefer the 992.1 generation over the 991, but the current market is making this tricky. Because of the avoidance behavior around the new hybrid 992.2 GTS, the 992.1 GTS prices are holding extremely high. That realistically leaves me looking at 992.1 Base models, a Carrera T (if I can find a one that isn't transacting for $150k+), or maybe an S with around 20,000 miles.

Stepping up to a GT3 just isn’t in the budget right now.
So, my question is for those who have made the jump from a 6-cylinder 718 or 981 to a 992 Base/T/S:

-Was the jump worth it? Do you ever regret it or miss your 718?
-Will it feel like a step back? My GTS 4.0 already has a bunch of the driving goodies included out of the box. Will a Base, T, or S feel less dynamic and less visceral compared to the 4.0 platform?

Sometimes I worry that in order to get the same raw driving feel I currently have, I'd have to step up to a GT3 on the 992+ 911 platform.

Would love to get this group's view, especially from anyone who has gone down this path as well!

Thank you!

Discovery 5 - purchasing advise (UK)

Hi all,

I’m looking to buy a Discovery 5 and this will be my first time buying into the brand. I’m probably overthinking this a lot but I have a few question that I wanted to ask to those with experience with the brand.

The Discovery’s I’ve been looking at are roughly 23/73 models with around 30k-40k miles and either HSE or R-Dynamics.

Most of the Discoveries I’ve seen are cheaper on Autotrader compared to main dealerships and thus making me lean into going to one of these smaller dealerships. Should I be buying from a main dealership for any reason or does it not really matter? The warranty is what is making me doubt myself.

Is there anything to look out for when purchasing? I.e. don’t buy over xxxx miles, something specific that may indicate an issue? I’ve no mechanical ability what so ever so I don’t really know what to look out for.

Are there any engine types to avoid? The D300 is what I’ve mainly looked at.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

D1 mystery

on the topic of immobilizers, does no one know how to deactivate the immobilizer on a D1? little back story my 98 Discovery 1 popped a headgasket so I took it apart to do said job (took me about a month waiting on parts and working crazy hours so my truck sat for all that time with a disconnected battery) upon finishing the job I connected everything back and surprise surprise Ive got no crank no start and the hazards are flashing. it’s a V8 50th anniversary D1 before anyone asks there’s no spider unit, the EKA code does nothing, the inertia switch doesn’t fix it and the key fob works and unlocks the doors and everything but still nothing I’ve even gone through ordering another 10AS security module (which cranks but no start and no central locking) Ive done everything I could find online as all the info I’ve found to be “the fix” doesn’t fix it. anyone know what to do I just want to drive my truck please help.

What will break next? Advice on spare parts to carry for a month-long trip D2 V8 pre-facelift

Hi all,

I’m planning a month-long road trip around Southern Europe in my 2000 pre-facelift Discovery 2 4.0 V8, which is also fitted with a Prins LPG system. I’m based in northern France, so there will be plenty of distance involved just getting there and back.

I bought the car two years ago. It had apparently seen some fairly serious off-roading in its previous life, but my use is mainly overlanding, some relatively easy off-roading, and regular 500+ km motorway trips.

It’s now at 230k km (around 140k miles), 35k km of which I’ve put on myself.

I’m trying to put together a sensible list of must-have spares, particularly things that are difficult to source quickly while travelling. As the car will also be our main living space for a month, every bit of storage counts, so I’d rather not carry half a workshop with me.

The car was basically stock when I bought it (appart from the LPG) but I’ve put a fair amount of work (and money…) into fixing and upgrading it since. Most things have been replaced either when they failed or when they looked like they were about to.

Work done so far:

  • New starter motor
  • New battery
  • EAS delete and +2” coil spring conversion
  • New steering damper
  • New A/C evaporator
  • New O2 sensors
  • Climate control panel LED conversion
  • New auxiliary belt
  • Inline thermostat upgrade
  • Sunroofs sealed (needed for the roof rack installation)
  • New rear door seal
  • New AT3 LT255/60 R18 tyres + wheel spacers
  • Steel front bumper
  • Auxiliary lights
  • New head unit
  • New steering shaft
  • New drive plate
  • Retrofitted an older RRC transmission pan with dipstick and top filler
  • Three Amigos shuttle valve fix
  • New windscreen
  • Sloppy new headliner job ( already sagging a bit )

Planned before the trip — parts already on the way:

  • Fan clutch upgrade
  • Water pump upgrade
  • New silicone coolant hoses

I’m currently considering carrying:

  • Fuel pump
  • Alternator
  • XYZ switch
  • 2 bottles of steelseal

The fuel pump and alternator take up a fair amount of space, so I probably can’t justify carrying many more large parts. I’m happy to swap either of them for something more essential or more likely to leave me stranded.

For diagnostics, I’ll also be carrying a Nanocom and an LPG diagnostic tool, so I should at least have a reasonable chance of identifying most electronic or LPG-related issues on the road.

I regularly check all fluid levels. There’s been a very slow power-steering leak since I bought the car, but nothing significant. Oil changes, plugs and general servicing are all done according to the recommended intervals.

The Prins LPG system has been reliable so far, but I’d also be interested to hear whether there are any LPG-specific components worth carrying. Obviously, if the LPG system itself fails I can simply run on petrol, so I’m mainly concerned about anything that could potentially prevent the engine from running altogether.

So, what would you expect to fail next at this mileage, and what would you absolutely carry on a month-long trip?

I’m particularly interested in parts that:

  • can fail without much warning;
  • would leave the car stranded;
  • are difficult to source quickly in Southern Europe; and
  • are realistic to replace at the roadside or at a local garage.

Would be great to hear from anyone who’s done similar long trips — particularly what you carried, what actually broke, and what you wish you’d brought with you!

New to me LR4. What do I need to lookout for?

I purchased a single owner 2016 SCV6 LR4. It has 72k miles on it, rides well, great condition.

I’ve never owned a European car before (always been a Land Cruiser guy) so I’m terrified of this thing breaking down on me.

What do I need to be on the lookout for and what preventative maintenance do I need to ensure I do and at what intervals?

I’d love to get the car to 200k miles.

LR5 2019 problems

Dear fellow LR enthousiasts, 2 months ago I became the proud owner of a disovery sport. I bought the car at an independant garage and 2 days after picking up the car the engine light appeared. The fault codes seem to point at the NOx sensor.

The garage replaced the sensor under warranty and reset the fault codes. 2 days later the engine light appeared again. This time the garage suspected the temperature sensor and replaced it.

Within a week the check engine light appeared again. According to the garage the DPF needs to be cleaned.

I am not convinced the guy at the garage is very competent at fixing land rovers. So I would like to hear your opinions.

Thanks!

2006 LR3 HSE 4.4 V8 HVAC FOAM CLEANER

Ive been running my AC and I notice a there is a musty wet odor coming from my the AC vents.

I Used an AC foam cleaner by removing the evap drain tube (RUBBER TUBE GENTLY PULL DOWN IT POPS OFF AND ON) and I sprayed the foam it into the evaporator. When your underneath the car the evapprator rubber drain tube is right above the transmission (I RAN A BRISSLE BRUSH THROUGH THE RUBBER TUBE THAT CLEANS SIPPY STRAWS TO CLEAR OUT ANY DEBRIS). So the best way to spray the foam is inside the vehicle (DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE).

I also removed the cabin filter behind the glove box and sprayed the blower and vents with disenfectant spray. Once i was done i turned the ECON AC (FAN BLOWER ONLY) and sprayed into the blower so it can circulate the disenfectant throughout tje vehicles vents (TURNED ON ALL VENTS FLOOR FACE AND WINDSHELIELD).

I hope these screeb shot photos will upload. The videos clips were to long..

Hope this helps. 🫡😎
