Which lenses do you actually use day-to-day?

Hey fellow cinematographers!

I'm planning to build a Sony FX3 setup soon, and I'm trying to figure out my lens lineup.

Obviously, I know the usual recommendations:

24-70mm f/2.8, 16-35mm f/2.8, 50mm / 85mm primes.

But I'm more interested in the less obvious choices.

There are so many lenses out there that don't always get mentioned in the usual "starter kit" conversations, such as; Tamron 17-28, Sigma 28-45 f/1.8, Zeiss 85mm, etc.

So I'm curious:

What lenses do you actually use for your day-to-day work?

Could be for: Corporate / commercial work, Events, Real estate, Documentaries, Interviews, Travel, General run-and-gun work

More importantly, which lenses make your life easier rather than creating another problem?

I'm particularly interested in lenses that:

  • Give you good image quality without costing a fortune
  • Aren't ridiculously heavy
  • Work well handheld
  • Balance reasonably well on a gimbal
  • Have a useful focal range
  • Are something you can realistically leave on the camera and go shoot

I'm not necessarily looking for the "best" lens. I'm looking for the lens you reach for because it just works.

Would love to hear what you guys actually use in the real world rather than just the standard 24-70 + primes recommendation.

FX3 or A7s3 in August 2026?

Hey guys, I am a fellow cinematographer

I specifically work with corporates, instagram ads, real estates, events, and other sorts of different digital works.

I have been using rental equipment whenever needed and had used my Canon 80D for the times when I cannot rent out the equipment.

Locally, the main challenges I have in rentals is lack of availability of Canon gear, and it really limits what I can get on rent as now a days a lot of people require 4k and 50/60fps un-cropped helps a long way.

So, since now I am considering finally getting my own camera, one thing I am confused about is, which one to get actually? More or less FX3 and A7s3 are the same equipment, designed for different use cases. I feel that A7s3 is over saturated in the market, and FX3 is widely recognised by a lot of people, allowing doors for more better work to open but it is also too highly praised by the youtube community.

The key question here is that for the sort of work that I do and might do in future, is FX3 or A7s3 a good choice to go ahead with? Or should I wait a couple of months while Sony launches the successor of the A7s3, which we still don’t know if it is gonna happen or no.

Thanks if you read till here, do let me know what do you think.
