SomniPods are way more comfortable for side sleeping than the A30

I almost didn’t buy them because I’d seen quite a few negative comments on Reddit, mostly about the built-in sleep sounds and noticeable loops.

I usually stream my own audio over Bluetooth anyway, so that ended up being a non-issue for me.

I actually tried the Sleep A30 first. They’re probably the more polished product overall and definitely have more features, but I just couldn’t get comfortable in them.

I’m a side sleeper, and I could always feel them against the pillow. By morning my ear canals would feel warm, damp and kind of stuffy, and sometimes a little itchy. I also found the bass a little too punchy for bedtime since I prefer a cleaner, more relaxed sound when I’m trying to sleep.

So I returned them and tried the SomniPods without expecting much.

Surprisingly, comfort is where they completely won me over.Once I’m lying down, I barely notice them in my ears, even on my side. The battery easily gets me through the night, and the ANC works well for steady background noise, but honestly, the fit is what I care about most.

The app definitely needs work, and I understand the complaints about the built-in sounds. I personally wouldn’t pay for the subscription either because the paid content didn’t seem that special to me, especially when I can just stream pretty much anything I want over Bluetooth anyway.

They’re definitely not perfect, but if comfort is your main priority, they ended up being a lot better than I expected.

Sleep earbuds made me enjoy TWS again

One thing I’ve noticed while looking at sleep earbuds is how different their priorities are from normal TWS earbuds.

Models like the Sony WF-1000XM5, Technics AZ100, Bose QC Ultra, and AirPods Pro 2 need space for larger batteries, microphones, controls, and other hardware. Sleep earbuds usually sacrifice some of that to sit much closer to the ear.

That tradeoff makes sense for sleeping, but I think regular TWS earbuds could learn something from it.

Being able to lean against a couch or pillow without the earbud pressing further into the ear makes a bigger difference than I expected. A flatter shape also makes the earbuds feel less noticeable during longer listening sessions.

Of course, making earbuds smaller usually means compromises in battery life, microphones, controls, or sound hardware. I still think there is room for more everyday TWS earbuds that prioritize a low-profile shape instead of trying to fit every possible feature into the shell.

Sleep earbuds pushed me to think about TWS design differently, but the broader point is that smaller and less noticeable earbuds deserve more attention outside the sleep category.
