Need Urgent Advice: IIM Sambalpur vs IIM Mumbai UG Admission Dilemma (₹4 Lakh at Risk)

Hi everyone,

I am in a very difficult situation and would really appreciate some advice from anyone who has gone through something similar or has knowledge about the admission process.

I applied for the undergraduate programmes at IIM Lucknow, IIM Mumbai, and IIM Sambalpur.

Recently, I received an admission offer from IIM Sambalpur. The final result was announced on 2 July, and the institute asked candidates to pay a ₹1,00,000 Seat Acceptance Fee by 8 July. Since I didn't want to lose my seat, I paid the amount.

However, what confused me is that the withdrawal deadline was also 8 July. This means candidates had to decide whether to withdraw even before the admission processes of some other IIMs were completed.

Now my situation is even more complicated.

I have been shortlisted for the Personal Interview at IIM Mumbai, and my interview is scheduled between 10 July and 18 July. IIM Mumbai is one of my top preferences, and if I receive an admission offer, I would prefer joining IIM Mumbai over IIM Sambalpur.

The problem is that IIM Sambalpur has informed me that there is no refund after the withdrawal deadline. On top of that, the first-semester fee of approximately ₹3 lakh has to be paid on 23 July.

So my dilemma is:

- If I pay the ₹3 lakh to secure my IIM Sambalpur seat and later receive an admission offer from IIM Mumbai after 23 July, I may lose around ₹4 lakh (₹1 lakh seat acceptance + ₹3 lakh semester fee).

- If I don't pay the semester fee and IIM Mumbai does not select me, I could lose my IIM Sambalpur admission entirely.

I have already emailed IIM Mumbai requesting information about the expected result date, but I have not yet received a response.

I wanted to ask the community:

  1. Has anyone faced a similar situation with overlapping admission timelines?

  2. Does IIM Mumbai usually declare UG admission results soon after the interviews, or could it take several weeks?

  3. Is there any possibility of requesting IIM Sambalpur for an extension or exception in such cases?

  4. If you were in my position, what would you do?

For context, I come from a financially modest family, so losing ₹4 lakh would be a very significant burden. At the same time, I don't want to give up the opportunity to join IIM Mumbai if I get selected.

I would really appreciate any advice, suggestions, or experiences from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with the admission process.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.
