Why is Market Entry so Tough?

Okay, so I know the market is tough (for all industries).

I reached interview stage 5/6 with a firm as ML engineer, where I just found I failed the programming task. One of the key points was that I didn't perform enough data analysis.

I agree that I overlooked a field they were looking for, but, my god, it's quite crushing after this much effort after I made several models with different params etc, did lots of evaluation and produced a report of many pages.

Are other industries this selective and brutal? Like, I know some structural engineers who danced around job offers in the past couple of months, and can literally negotiate salaries with the competition. These all are 3 stage inteeview processes at MOST AND the entire processes take like 2-3 weeks.

Why the hell does every goddamn CS role have a 6 stage process with multiple tasks, interviews etc.???? Especially ones that take months to process. What happened??? It makes the barrier to entry ludicrously high.

Cheers for any feedback!

100% DS3 Possible?

Hi all,

So I've decided to try to 100% Dead Space 3 on the Xbox Series X as I've 100% DS1 and DS2.

I'm aware of the very important coop feature locking some of this including:

  1. Logs

  2. Artificats

  3. Weapon Parts

  4. Circuits

I don't have paid online (I'm happy to get it), but even if I were, I assume that EA have shut down their servers? Is this the case? I guess 100% is impossible if so :(

Thanks!

Stock Refunds on Donald Trump Illegal Tariffs

Hi all,

So, as you might know, Donald Trump's Liberation Day tariffs were declared illegal and the companies invovled have been refunded $100bn.

I was a large shareholder in the big companies invovled. I lost about £50k during the (illegal) tariff announcements, which was realised when I sold the stocks. I then took a short position on the volatility index just before Donald Trump announced (illegal) 1000% tariffs on Chinese goods. The price of this option rose 300% to above 2008 levels. My margins were closed and I've been bankrupt since April 2025.

What are the chances any refunds are given back to shareholders? Is there to be a class action or anything like that? I would like my £100k back if possible.

Thanks for any help!

How to get Atorias of the Abyss DLC?

Hi folks,

So I'm playing the Dark Souls franchise originally from Demon's Souls.

I've just finished DS I for the Xbox 360 and wanted to play the DLC. The issue is that that item has been permanently removed from Xbox store. This is quite strange, becuase I've bought many a DLC for old Xbox games even on the modern store.

Apparently I can either

  1. Get DS I Prepare to Die Edition, where the DLC is included or

  2. Play DS Remastered (also includes DLC)

Unless someone knows of some dodgy code sites?? I have good money!

Thanks!

Praise the sun 🙌🌞

Norton is Right (DS3)!!!

Right, I've just played Dead Space 3. And, my goodness, have I never agreed with an "antagonist" more.

Like, everytime he says "Why are we doing this?", I'm like, "Yeah man, wtf???"

Honestly, when the game was making you kill him, I let go of my controller and let Norton shoot Isaac in the head. He is the only one mature enough for this world.

I finish with a small excerpt which highlights Norton's chadness:

Chad Norton: Okay, geniuses, here's a question; Let's say this stupid experiment works and you find the Machine. Then what? Do you guys even have a clue about "turning it off"?

Isaac Clarke: Well, Admiral Graves referred to a Codex. She said it was the key to controlling the Machine.

Jennifer Santos: Yes! I've been able to decrypt several of Dr. Serrano's logs and he references someone named "Rosetta" as being instrumental in forging this key.

Chad Norton: Are you listening to yourselves? You don't know any more about this bullshit than do!

Isaac Clarke: Ifcan find the parts tomake a sensor, we can find the Machine, Then we can figure out this Codex business.

Chad Norton: Unbelievable.

Struggling to find a Grad Job with a PhD (UK)

Hi all,

So, I'm in a little bit of a crisis right now. I graduated with my PhD a few months ago. I want to work abroad, so, originally, I was applying for (industry) jobs in e.g., Asia/Australia.

However, this was incredibly bleak, and I realise that no company would want to sponsor me.

So, I realised my expectations and have been applying for London software engineering jobs for about a month and a half. About 100 applications and only one response, with an interview that went well. Though, when I received the technical test, I was at a wedding, so requested that I have another couple of days to do it. He said yes, but then they hired someone the next day anyway.

To put this into perspective and why I am so shocked. In 2020, I applied to 8 game enginering jobs. I had 4 interviews and 2 offers in the space of 2 weeks. My portfolio is significantly better than previously but I'm experiencing the inverse success.

The reason I mention this is a crisis, is because my parents want to kick me out of the house. I have little savings maybe for a couple of months rent. I live in the countryside without a car so can't easily get a part-time job, which I'm fearful of because when I last wasn't at my PC the only oppurtunity was taken.

I'm on a big time limit. My backup plan is to move to London to be a part-time croupier in a casino to make ends meet, at least I know they are always hiring. Again, I'm fearful of this becaue it will slowdown my application process.

I know the market is a bit slower now and the "golden age" is dead. But, seriously, what is going on? I am applying to JUNIOR roles for God's sake. Any suggestions about the current market? Should I just wait for the economy to be, well, better? Is this just a software engineering problem, or the market in general?

Finally, please be nice guys, Reddit seems to attract some rather disagreeable folk for some reason and that's the last thing I need right now.

Thanks :)!

US Import Duty for UK Goods

Hi,

So I just bought some T-shirts from a US firm over the web. The amount claimed on the FINAL receipt was 42% less than what my bank is charging me.

UK VAT is 20%. So where are these other charges? I emailed the firm asking why there is a difference and why it is so high. They said to me they can't show me:

>The reason the tax ($26.99) did not appear as a separate line item on your order confirmation or card charge is due to a configuration issue on the payment processor’s end – the tax was bundled into the total charge. Unfortunately, we cannot generate a separate invoice showing the tax breakdown because our system only shows the final total. We have attached a screenshot of our internal record showing the total amount as $90.96, We understand this is not ideal, and we apologize for the confusion.
As we mentioned earlier, the consumption tax is determined by your location and automatically applies according to local regulations - this fee is mandatory when shipping your order to your address, so we cannot refund the tax ourselves.

What is going on? Are they being shady? Surely they MUST, legally, have a breakdown of the charges?

Thanks for any help!

Impossible to Cancel Premium Subscriptions

Hi all,

So i use LinkedIn as I am applying for jobs. The mobile app advertised for free premium month and I accepted. I tried to cancel my subscription very shortly after (so as to not be charged for the yearly plan one the free month ended).

It turns out, there is no way of cancelling a subscription on a mobile. As confirmed by their staff, the only way to cancel a subscription is on a desktop computer.

I didn't have access to a machine as I was travelling, so then I'm in a situation where I can never cancel a LindeIn premium subscription.

Surely a platform that only allows cancellation of a service on an entirely different platform is not allowed? This feels either illegal or just horrible business practice.

In either case I will not use LinkedIn again.

Thanks for any help!
