Update with question
Heres the update with the stones loose layed. I'm still massaging them into place and will fill the gaps with sedums.
I raised the spill tray a bit so I have a downward plundge into the pond but it still feels minimal. The water is nicely disturbed from the bog overflow down to the final plunge and I am curious if this is enough? Water is clean and fish are not gathering near the falls.
(420gph pump in 250g+49gal spill tray. Took about 7min to fill the 40gal bog before rock and now it takes 3.5min)
Could you conceivably have super oxygenated water flowing below the surface of a stagnant pond and be ok with some minimal surface disruption like an airstone?
Bog questions
So here's the design I settled on. The plumbing will get covered
Do i need a tight seal from the pump hose to the "t" pipe feeding the bog? I plan on lowering it closer to the waterline.
I'm in pacific northwest zone 8b and not sure about plants. I put Bacopa in my small ponds but pulled out the pot for winter. I left a couple slipper pot inserts to do that, but can I just plant directly in the gravel? Should I wash the roots?
How important is the substrate height to the water level? I was thinking I could do a bed of sedum succulents if it was shallow enough.
I used the 4" tubing to create a void to the bottom so I can use my water python for clean out instead of a drain hole at the bottom.
Hope this works long term. Water is clear and cycling with some feeder goldfish.
Cheers!
Suggestions on this plan
Thought was to pump out of the main into a 25-50gal bog that overflows into the smaller collection pond that feeds back to the main.
Any issues? Where do I put the actual pump (in the main pond, bog, or external)?
Will they make it?!
2ea (6-8") myan butterflies in a 50g pond. Good permaters and 300 g/p filtration but not enough swimming space. Will upgrade to 280gal next year or rehome....
Super shimmer!
Brief shot of afternoon sun really makes things pop!
