Looking for Advice on Teaching Opportunities in Japan

Hi everyone,

I recently finished my PhD in Information at an R1 university in the U.S. and will be relocating to Japan in a few weeks, most likely Okinawa. Since this move came together unexpectedly, I’m now trying to learn how to navigate the academic job market in Japan. I’m mainly interested in university teaching, lecturer, and research opportunities.

For those familiar with academia in Japan, where should I be looking for openings, and is there anything important I should know about hiring cycles or applying with a U.S. PhD?

Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Vet Advice

Made it through two full interview loops, no offers, and recruiters gave little to no specific feedback.

For those who interview a lot or sit on hiring panels: what usually separates a case study that lands an offer from one that doesn’t? What are common mistakes candidates make? How do you get real feedback out of a recruiter debrief instead of vague answers?

Seeking Remote Adjunct Opportunities

Hi everyone,

I recently completed my Ph.D. in Information Science and also have a strong background in African Studies. I'm looking for fully remote adjunct teaching opportunities.

My teaching and research areas include:

  • Data Ethics
  • AI & Society
  • Race & Technology
  • Elements of Web Creation
  • Introductory web design courses
  • Information society
  • Courses involving post/decolonial theory & courses on technology in Africa.

I'm also comfortable teaching humanities and interdisciplinary courses, particularly those at the intersection of technology and society.

If anyone knows of universities that are hiring remote adjunct faculty or has any leads or recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

What’s a common ‘Problem’ or ‘Pain Point’ that technology/software can solve right now?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to understand daily frustrations Nigerians deal with— that you feel software or an app could genuinely fix if someone built the right thing.

Could be something small and annoying or something huge and systemic. Curious what’s actually top of mind for people living it day to day, not just the “obvious” startup ideas everyone talks about.

What’s bugging you that tech hasn’t solved yet?

Any opinion on creating an LLC

* I am curious to hear opinions on here - I understand this is not legal advice*

Background

We are planning to establish a technology company. Our business focuses on the development, ownership, and commercialization of software products across multiple industries, including healthcare, sports, business, and other sectors.

Although our software products serve different markets and industries, they are all developed and managed by the same organization (us). We anticipate expanding our portfolio over time by introducing additional software products in various domains.

Objective

Our primary objective is to determine the most appropriate legal structure that allows us to operate multiple software product lines under a single company, rather than forming separate legal entities for each product or industry.

Ideally, we would like to organize the business into divisions or business units while maintaining one overarching legal entity, provided that this approach is legally and operationally appropriate.

Questions

  1. Whether operating multiple software products across different industries under a single legal entity with separate divisions is advisable.
  2. Whether a Series LLC or an S Corporation would be the more appropriate structure for our business objectives in Ohio.
  3. The advantages and disadvantages of each option, including considerations related to:
    • Liability protection
    • Tax treatment
  4. Whether another entity structure (such as a standard LLC taxed as an S Corporation or another alternative) would better align with our long-term business goals.

Long-Term Considerations

Our intention is to build a long-term technology company with multiple software brands and products. We want a structure that minimizes unnecessary complexity while providing flexibility for future expansion, protecting our intellectual property, and supporting future investment opportunities.

Thank you y'all
