You really just have to laugh sometimes

Every now and again this goldmine comes up on my timeline doxxing yet another teacher and today I saw this banger of a post.

Do we need to even mention which/whose policies are directly linked to literacy issues and having to promote students despite them not meeting the grade level criteria?

If I was this unaware and existed in such a state of ignorance I feel like my life would be a lot better.🙂

ETA:

I didn’t realize so many people didn’t recognize where I was coming from with this. Let me explain.

I don’t disagree with the message! Hate hate HATE that I have to spend time teaching my kids how to take a test and not actually read/think critically and have engaging debates and discussions because if I don’t do that my school gets paid less which means I get paid less.

I just think it’s a bit ironic that the person delivering the message is someone who spends all day everyday doxxing teachers for the most inane non-issue things ever. By “you have to laugh” I meant laugh at the irony yall😭

THOSE infamous ten commandment posters

First year full time teacher here— teaching 10th grade pre AP English.

Got into my classroom the other day and wow… those signs are wayyyy bigger than I thought they would be🥲

Full disclosure: I love Jesus! But I think it’s a personal choice and these signs are disgusting and have no place in the classroom.

Of course my number one thought was “I hate this and I know my classroom is extremely diverse and I don’t want to make any students feel uncomfortable and I want them all to know they are welcome and loved.”

I’ve seen other people’s suggestions for how to address them, but I had a thought and wanted to gain some perspective from those that have taught high school for years.

Will these teenagers really care about the sign even a little bit/even notice it? My current line of thinking is that if I draw attention to it, I’m creating an issue, whereas if I just let it sit up there and never make it into a thing, the majority of them won’t notice it. But then I think about the few students that might notice it and feel upset… I want them to know that they are important and loved too.

My fiancé asked his friend (been friends for years and went to the same HS, which is actually in the district I’m teaching in this year, and is a practicing Muslim) how he would have felt as a student if this was a thing back then and he said he would have definitely been pissed and uncomfortable, but at the same time would have known that the teacher had no choice. He also said he does think I am correct in thinking that most kids won’t care at all but admitted he’s not a teacher and is never around teenagers so take it with a grain of salt lol.

I guess like I said I just really want to hear from you guys, especially if you’ve been around teens in the classroom for years. Am I wayyy overthinking this and my best bet is to just totally ignore it because the kids will too?

Please help!!!! 🥲

URGENT: ACP increased tuition payment with no warning

Hello!

This is a bit of an urgent request as I’m currently trying to figure out my next steps.

I received notification from my ACP today that they “changed their policy” and starting in August “candidates with a tuition balance will no longer be permitted to start their internship without setting up the recurring payments in XXXXXXX.  Once internship begins, your remaining tuition balance will be divided into 10 monthly payments.”

I agreed to and am currently on a payment plan of $95 a month. Based on when I started and including August, this leaves me at around 43 more payments of $95 a month— yes, this is a lot but obviously the hope is as I am a teacher of record and making decent money as opposed to subbing/student teaching, I’ll be able to increase those payments.

To my understanding, this is stating that in August, which is when my full-time teaching job (aka my internship) starts, I will go from 42 months to 10 months to pay off my over $4,000 balance— and the payments must be automatic recurring payments. They made sure to add that if you do not pay, it “may result in immediate consequences, including deactivation of my internship/probationary certificate and removal from your teaching placement.” (Direct quote from their email)

Am I overreacting or is it completely unreasonable to expect students to go from $95 payments to over $400 with less than a month warning? With the consequence being losing your cert/job????

Has anyone else dealt with this? Not that i want to go this route but do I have ANY legal standing here as far as the previous agreement to pay $95 a month?

Discrepancies between CT/Ultrasound and MRI and diagnosis

26F, 175 lbs 5’6
Meds: Lexapro (anxiety), Lamotrigine (bipolar and epilepsy), singulair (allergies), topiramate (epilepsy), hydroxyzine (MCAS), azithromycin (daily, for IGA deficiency)

I went into the ER last Tuesday morning with severe abdominal pain and vomiting— couldn’t even walk upright or speak. ER doc told me that Ultrasound and CT (attached) showed gallstones and gallstone pancreatitis as well as an inflamed bile duct which was concerning for a blockage. He said I’ll need surgery and antibiotics as well as an MRI and admitted me. Later that day (not quite 12 hours) they did the MRI and it seems like the findings seem to contradict the ultrasound and CT— which I chalked up to the MRI just being more sensitive and being able to visualize everything. The GI doctor consult said they don’t particularly think it’s pancreatitis due to the MRI results but Internal Medicine (the attending) disagreed due to the high lipase I believe and kept pumping me with antibiotics then early the next morning they took out me gallbladder which the general surgeon told me was “very angry”. The final diagnosis did end up being gallstones with pancreatitis and no duct blockage. I had surgery Wednesday and was discharged Thursday afternoon.

My incisions look great but I’m still dealing with a lot of *left* side pain, which I thought was strange as that’s not the gallbladder side lol. 9/10 pain when pressing on it, 3-4/10 when just sitting or laying down, 6-7/10 when moving. Was given hydrocodone on discharge but I took one and it didn’t particularly help me any more than Tylenol so I haven’t been taking it due to a complicated family history with drugs and a very strict mindset about opiates and narcotics.

I guess I’m just wondering if this seems like a normal progression of actions— I’ve seen a lot of people with gallbladder surgery being discharged the same day so I was annoyed I had to stay an extra night 🤣 I also don’t know if there are actual discrepancies between the different types of imaging or if I am just not educated enough medically to know the difference. Or if I had to stay longer because of my immune system being a lil rough? I honestly was too focused on getting out of the hospital to ask these questions which is why I am coming here 😅

Other than the attached results, the other potentially relevant results are a low potassium and magnesium upon presentation to the ER (fixed with IVs), high chloride, low BUN. I believe everything else was normal! I don’t know if there’s any other relevant info I’m missing, ask whatever questions you may have!

Book suggestions for classroom library?

Hi!

Starting this fall, I’ll be teaching English I or II ad a first year teacher. I started off this semester as a sub and am ending the semester as a fourth grade ELA teacher so it will be quite the jump but one I am VERY ready for.

I’m starting to think about my classroom library and what books I’d like to have in it. Obviously some of the classics, but I also want things that kids will find interesting and want to read. What suggestions to you have/what books have worked well for you?

As a note: I am in Texas where books are quite a hot-button topic so keep that in mind when making suggestions 🙃

Students’ social awareness (or lack thereof)

Are any other elementary school teachers absolutely baffled by these kids’ lack of social awareness? I’ll be teaching high school next year thank GOD (I’ve worked with high schoolers before and while not perfect they’re at least slightly better than this) but this year I was a building sub for all elementary grades and now I’m ending the year as a 4th grade ELA sub.

These kids will just walk up to you while you’re at the front of the classroom giving instructions or shout something out. They constantly interrupt your conversations with other kids and even adults. I had a child SNAP HIS FINGERS in my face yesterday to get my attention while I was helping another student. Burping/passing gas without saying excuse me, shoving past people, totally invading personal space, asking insanely personal questions that no student should ever ask a teacher— the whole nine yards.

Are my kids exceptionally rude or is this par for the course for this generation?

A certain subset of individuals is so concerned with teachers indoctrinating their students in the classroom and trying to make them gay

Meanwhile I (26F) had a fourth grader (boy) ask me this morning (unprompted) if I was a virgin in front of the entire class.

Maybe we should focus more on what’s going on at home that makes them think that’s an appropriate thing to ask their teacher.

As the kids these days say: we are so cooked.

Edit: I made them write a page on why we only have kind and appropriate discussions, and will be talking to admin on my planning period. Had them back to back periods before lunch and recess unfortunately. Very sad because I usually love this class and don’t have issues.
