Total NOOB to backup/cloning entire drives

In the past I've used backup software only to make sure my data and home directories were recoverable. I've never actually had a dying drive before, but now I'm looking at one that will need to be replaced soon. I've started moving data, files, pix, etc. to the cloud but really would like to just "snapshot" my entire system (Windows 11 Pro), install a drive, and restore the "snapshot" to the new drive and have it be my old install, just on a new piece of hardware.

I'm looking at Macrium Reflect and am struggling to figure out the process. Yeah, I feel stupid but that's why I'm here - to learn.

I have a 1TB external USB drive for file storage. Using Macrium, do I "clone" or "image" my internal SSD (not an NVME drive, BTW) and place the clone or image "file" on that external drive to use when the new SSD is installed?

Once the new SSD is installed, how do I get to the file on the external disk to "reinstall" to the new hardware? Is the Macrium software itself installable to a USB drive that I can boot into (kind of like LiveUSBs for Linux installs).

Like I said, total noob to this and seeking some guidance. A step-by-step would be best. I haven't bought the new drive yet, so I can't effectively test anything at this point. I'm just looking for where and how to start and accomplish this.

Hope I was asking the right questions. Fire away if you have additional questions that might help clarify my scenario. I'm off to work for the next 8 hours, so I won't be able to reply until later today.

Thanks in advance, y'all.

Value?

Apologies is this is the wrong thread to ask this question. Please let me know a more appropriate location if that’s the case!

I inherited my dad’s 1981 (pre-ban) HK91. I remember when he bought it through the sheriff department’s armorer’s contacts. Anywho, it has the original web sling and an ART-IV 3x9 scope on it.

My dad probably only put about 200 rounds through it. I hunted with it in high school (LONG time ago) and all told has less than 1500 rounds through it because frankly it’s too damn heavy to lug around. Full 20-rounds mag and with the scope it weighs in at 13 pounds. I’m too broken and old for this foolishness anymore so I’m looking to list it on GunBroker through a local dealer/pawn shop to make keeping the sale legal easier.

What should I list it for? I’m hoping to be able to buy either a couple of mid-range ARs or, my dream, a nice single-shot 38-55 or 45-70 (High wall or rolling block). I love BP shooting, but not averse to an AR.

TIA for any advice here!

Distro recommendation

Hi all! Tried posting to r/findmeadistro but I could not get the join request to go through to the mods. Anywho…

Reddit noob here so my apologies in advance if this has been addressed previously. Working from my phone so searching is sometimes less than ideal.

I’ve been a Linux user (off and on) since the mid-90s. To give you an idea of how long I’ve messed around with it - Slackware pre 1.0 was my first, and most painful, install (with the Enlightenment WM).

I’m nothing more than a casual user though. I install a distribution, usually dick around with it for a few days/weeks/months and then move on to something else or return to Windows. I don’t mind messing around with settings, but I avoid CLI like the plague. I grew up in the green screens era and swore I would never go back if it was at all possible to avoid.

So now I’m searching for a new OS toy. Preferably Linux (because my HP Elitebook laptop has issues with the BSD OSes). I have lately used BigLinux but a recent update made it impossible for me to login (screen went black). Using a backup also failed. So I wiped everything clean and installed Fedora (with KDE). It’s ok, but a resource hog. I loved how fast BL ran on my system previously. CachyOS ran great too, but same issue. An update broke my login and I couldn’t restore.

So, all that to ask. What’s a good, somewhat bleeding edge (but won’t brick my system) distribution that I can play around in for a few months (and if it proves reliable - keep as my daily driver)?

Needs a simple firewall setup (God I hate messing with that shit), easy WiFi printing setup, and simple connectivity to my online accounts (Gmail, iCloud, Proton). It’s mostly a web/email browsing setup but should include some fun configuration ability. I like KDE, but it’s both boring and sometimes overly complex. I guess I’m middle of the road on screwing around with configuring/customizing. Gnome is often more interesting, but lacks some of KDE configuration.

So basically - I wanna new toy. Any suggestions?
