J pouch surgery July 6

Finally made the decision last month to move forward with my J-pouch surgery. I’ve had my colostomy bag for about a year and a half, and my surgery is scheduled for July 6.

For those of you who’ve been through the J-pouch creation, what are some tips, tricks, or things you wish you had known before or after surgery?

Anything that made recovery easier or helped you adjust? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, I’m 27 and looking for some real-life input from people who’ve actually gone through this—not just the success stories, but the tough parts too.
A little background: I had severe Ulcerative Colitis for about 3 years. About a year and a half ago (October), things got bad enough that I ended up in the hospital and was told I needed emergency surgery to remove my colon. I didn’t really have a choice at that point.

They removed my entire colon and appendix, and now I have an ostomy bag.

Honestly… life has been really good since. The bag has its pros and cons, but 90% of the time it’s totally manageable. I pretty much do whatever I want, eat what I want, and it doesn’t hold me back much.

I just made an appointment with my doctor to talk about moving forward with a J-pouch, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s actually worth it.

Since the bag doesn’t really bother me, I’m not desperate to change—but I also don’t want to miss out on something that could be better long-term.

So for anyone who’s been through it:
Was getting a J-pouch worth it for you?
What are the downsides people don’t talk about?
Any regrets going from an ostomy to a J-pouch?
If you could go back, would you make the same decision?

Really just looking for honest experiences—good, bad, or somewhere in between.
Appreciate any insight 🙏

Most feedback I see it’s a 50-50 you get lucky and you don’t have many issues or you get a lot of issues so I’m just really wanting to hear everyone’s opinion on this !!
